RAIN WATER HARVESTING
Rainwater harvesting is a process of collecting and storing rain water for using it as
a backup supply of fresh water to meet every day domestic and agricultural
requirements, especially when water becomes scarcely available. There are several
methods by which we can collect rainwater flowing from our roof tops, ditches,
gardens, fields, forests and other locations. These methods are discussed in detail
in the following essays. Rainwater harvesting not only provides fresh water in
difficult times but also prevent naturally occurring fresh water resources from
drying up, by reducing the demand of water. Rainwater harvesting is the least we
can do to maintain the supply of water and also to support life on earth.
HOW DOES RAIN WATER
HARVESTING HELP US?
1. Water Scarcity Solution: With increasing water scarcity worldwide,
rainwater harvesting has become crucial. By capturing rainwater, we
can supplement our water supply and reduce dependence on other
sources.
2. Groundwater Replenishment: Many regions rely on groundwater for
daily needs. However, excessive usage, deforestation, and
urbanization have led to declining groundwater levels. Rainwater
harvesting helps maintain groundwater levels, ensuring a sustainable
water source.
3. Preventing Water Logging: Proper rainwater harvesting prevents
water from accumulating on roads and streets, reducing the risk of
flooding and waterlogging.
4. Soil Erosion Control: Rainwater harvesting systems divert water
away from erodible surfaces, minimizing soil erosion.
5. Improved Water Quality: Rainwater is naturally pure and free from
contaminants. Harvested rainwater can be used for drinking, cooking,
and other household purpose

HOW PEOPLE WASTE WATER.
Water makes up 70% of the earth as well as the human body. There are millions of
marine species present in today’s world that reside in water. Similarly, humankind
also depends on water. All the major industries require water in some form or the
other. However, this precious resource is depleting day by day. The majority of the
reasons behind it are man-made only. Thus, the need for water conservation is more
than ever now. Through this water conservation essay, you will realize how
important it is to conserve water and how scarce it has become. Life without water is
not possible. We need it for many things including cleaning, cooking, using the
washroom, and more. Moreover, we need clean water to lead a healthy life. All in all,
we must identify water scarcity as a real issue as it is very dangerous. Further, after
identifying it, we must make sure to take steps to conserve it. There are many things
that we can do on a national level as well as an individual level. So, we must come
together now and conserve water.
Benefits of rain water
harvesting.
1. Cost Savings: Rainwater is essentially free—capturing it can
significantly reduce your water bills by providing an alternative water
source for various needs.
2. Water Conservation: By collecting rainwater, you decrease your
reliance on municipally treated water. This conservation effort extends
to both individual households and entire communities.
3. Environmental Responsibility: Rainwater harvesting reduces
stormwater runoff from properties, preventing contamination of
surface water with pesticides, sediment, metals, and fertilizers. It also
minimizes the potential for streambank erosion.
4. Improved Water Quality: Harvested rainwater is free from chemicals
like fluoride and chloramines found in municipal water. It’s an excellent
choice for landscape irrigation and other non-potable uses.
5. Energy Efficiency: Using rainwater for various purposes within a
property reduces the amount of water that municipalities need to treat
and pump. This energy-saving aspect benefits both homeowners and
the community.
6. Groundwater Replenishment: Rainwater harvesting contributes to
groundwater recharge, maintaining the adequacy of underground
water sources.
7. Drought Mitigation: During dry spells, rainwater harvesting systems
serve as a reliable backup water supply.
summery
Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the collection and storage of rain, rather than
allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from a roof like surface and redirected
to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with
percolation, so that it seeps down and restores the ground water. Dew and fog can
also be collected with nets or other tools. Rainwater harvesting differs
from stormwater harvesting as the runoff is typically collected from roofs and
other area surfaces for storage and subsequent reuse.[2]: 10 Its uses include watering
gardens, livestock,[3] irrigation, domestic use with proper treatment, and domestic
heating. The harvested water can also be committed to longer-term storage
or groundwater recharge.[4]
Rainwater harvesting is one of
the simplest and oldest methods
of self-supply of water for
households, having been used in
South Asia and other countries
for many thousands of years.

Installations can be designed
for different scales including
households, neighborhoods and
communities and can also be designed to serve institutions such as schools,
hospitals and other public facilities.[6]
