Script for Report Presentation: Article 14, Section 16 – Cultural Treasure of the
Nation
Good day everyone! Today, I’ll be reporting about Article 14, Section 16 of the
Philippine Constitution, which talks about the Cultural Treasure of the Nation.
So, according to the Constitution, “All the country’s artistic and historic wealth
constitutes the cultural treasure of the nation and shall be under the protection of the
State which may regulate its disposition.”
In simpler words, this means that everything that shows our country’s art, history, and
culture is considered part of our national treasure, and the government has the duty
to protect and take care of it.
Now, let’s understand how this connects to different areas of our lives.
Connection to Education
In schools, we learn about our heritage, history, and values. This helps students, like us,
to understand where we came from and why our culture is important. For example,
when we study Philippine history or traditional art, we are learning about our cultural
treasures.
Connection to Arts and Culture
Through arts and culture, Filipinos express their creativity. Our paintings, dances,
songs, and crafts reflect who we are as a people. Artists like Juan Luna and Fernando
Amorsolo show the beauty and struggles of our nation through their works.
Connection to History
Our cultural treasures also help keep our history alive. They remind us of our
ancestors, the struggles they went through, and the traditions they left behind. Without
them, we might forget important parts of our identity.
Connection to Tourism and Economy
Cultural treasures also attract tourists. When people visit places like Intramuros, Vigan,
or the Banaue Rice Terraces, it helps the community earn income. So aside from
preserving our culture, these sites also support our economy.
Examples of Cultural Treasures
Some examples of cultural treasures in the Philippines are:
● Historic sites like Intramuros, Banaue Rice Terraces, and Vigan City.
● Artistic works such as the paintings of Juan Luna and Fernando Amorsolo,
or indigenous weavings like T’nalak and Abel Iloko.
● Traditional dances like Tinikling and Singkil.
● And historical artifacts such as the Balangay Boats in Butuan, old coins,
manuscripts, and national costumes.
All of these remind us of our creativity, history, and traditions as Filipinos.
Importance to the Filipino People
Our cultural treasures are very important because they:
1. Promote national identity – They remind us who we are as Filipinos.
→ Example: When we see the Philippine flag or hear “Lupang
Hinirang,” we feel proud to be Filipino.
2. Preserve history – They help us remember where we came from.
→ Example: Visiting Intramuros or reading old manuscripts connects
us to our ancestors.
3. Encourage patriotism – They make us love and value our country.
→ Example: Watching historical films or national celebrations makes
us proud of our culture.
4. Inspire creativity – They motivate artists, musicians, and dancers to create new
works inspired by tradition.
5. Support the economy – Cultural tourism brings visitors, jobs, and
income to many communities.
→ Example: Tour guides, souvenir sellers, and local performers all
benefit from tourists visiting cultural sites.
Challenges and Issues
Even though we have many treasures, there are problems we face:
● Destruction of heritage sites because of modernization.
→ Example: Old buildings being demolished to make way for malls or
condos.
● Theft and illegal sale of artifacts.
→ Some valuable items are stolen and sold abroad, which means part
of our history is lost.
● Lack of awareness among the youth.
→ Many young people today prefer modern trends and sometimes
forget the importance of our traditions and history.
That’s why it’s our job as students to appreciate and protect our culture. We can do
this by learning about it, visiting historical sites, joining cultural events, and being proud
of our heritage.
Closing
To end my report, Article XIV Section 16 reminds us that our art, history, and culture
are treasures that define us as Filipinos. Protecting them is not only the job of the
government — it’s also our responsibility as citizens.
