Literature Survey on Analysing Students

Performance Using Machine Learning

Introduction

In recent years, there has been significant progress in the field of machine learning (ML),
particularly in its applications in the education sector. One of the critical areas of
research has been the analysis of students' performance using ML models.
With the rise of data availability and computational power, institutions are leveraging
machine learning algorithms to predict student outcomes, improve teaching methods,
and offer personalized learning experiences.
This literature survey aims to track the progress in this field over the last few years,
presenting key research findings, trends, and future scope.

Progress of the Topic Over the Last Few Years

The application of machine learning in education has seen rapid development.

In the early 2010s, the focus was primarily on traditional statistical methods
for analyzing student data. However, as more advanced ML algorithms such as decision
trees,
support vector machines (SVM), and neural networks emerged, researchers shifted
towards these
to uncover patterns and predict student success.
From 2015 onwards, deep learning and ensemble learning methods became prominent,
enabling
the creation of models that could handle complex, non-linear relationships in educational
data.
Research papers from this period emphasize personalized learning, predicting dropout
rates,
and even suggesting interventions to improve student retention.
The rise of platforms such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) also provided rich
datasets
for machine learning researchers.
Review of Related Research Papers

Several research papers have contributed to the analysis of student performance using
ML.
For instance, a paper published in 2018 explored the use of random forest algorithms to
predict
student grades based on various demographic and academic features. The model showed
significant
accuracy in identifying students at risk of underperforming.
Another study from 2020 focused on neural networks to forecast dropout rates in MOOCs.

The paper highlighted that deep learning models, while powerful, require large amounts
of data to perform well, which is a common limitation in educational datasets.
Comparatively, another study explored logistic regression for its simplicity and
interpretability in smaller datasets, though its predictive power was lower than
more advanced algorithms.

Analyzing Students Performance Using Machine Learning

Machine learning has been extensively applied to analyze student performance.

Some of the most common techniques include:
1. Classification Algorithms: These are used to categorize students into different groups
based on performance. For instance, students can be classified as high achievers,
at-risk students, or average performers using classifiers such as decision trees
or random forests.
2. Regression Analysis: This technique is often used to predict numerical outcomes such
as
final grades or attendance percentages. Linear regression, polynomial regression,
and even support vector regression (SVR) have been used to model these outcomes.
3. Clustering: Clustering techniques such as k-means clustering have been applied to
group
students based on similarities in their learning habits, engagement levels,
or other attributes. This helps institutions in providing targeted learning interventions.
While these techniques offer significant advantages, including improved academic
outcomes
and personalized learning paths, challenges remain in terms of data privacy, algorithm
fairness,
and the interpretability of black-box models like neural networks.
Future Scope

The future of machine learning in education holds great promise. As data becomes more
accessible
and machine learning algorithms continue to evolve, new opportunities will arise in
predictive analytics.
Techniques such as reinforcement learning could be explored to improve real-time
feedback for students.
Furthermore, ensuring fairness and transparency in ML models is becoming a crucial area
of research
to address biases that might affect model performance in diverse educational settings.
In addition, with the advent of federated learning, data from different institutions could
be
used collaboratively while maintaining privacy, further advancing the analysis of student
performance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, analyzing students' performance using machine learning has progressed

significantly
in the last decade. From simple regression models to complex deep learning architectures,

the application of ML in education is proving invaluable for enhancing student learning

experiences.
However, challenges such as ensuring fairness, interpretability, and ethical use of data
still
require attention. Future research should focus on overcoming these challenges while
continuing
to innovate in predictive modeling for educational outcomes.
