REMARKS:
Lab procedure modification: To prevent the scaling, the specimen should be placed in an upright
tube attached to a flat base, both of a heat-resistant metal, with collar projecting for a tong hold.
Place a disk of graphite or carbon in the bottom of the tube to prevent scaling.
The most hardenable material: W1 tool steel, with the highest hardness value developed being
recorded at 865 HV.
The least hardenable material: 1018 CR steel, with the highest hardness value being 321.6 HV.
W1 tool steel and 4140 HR steel have the final hardness across the specimens higher than the
initial hardness. This is because these two materials have a high amount of alloy composition
compared to 1018 CR and 1045 CR steel. The alloy will increase the hardenability of steel.
These alloys will extend the time before the start of austenite to pearlite formation. This means
the nose of the time-temperature-transformation curve will move to the right. Therefore, the
cooling trajectory may go straight from austenite to martensite.
