Phonological Awareness: Recognize Rhyme
Explain to children that words that rhyme have the same ending sounds. Point to and name the pictures in
the first row: man, can, mat. Say: The words man and can rhyme because they have the same ending sounds.
They end with the sounds /an/. Tell children you will circle these pictures. Now point to and say the names of
the other pictures on the page. Have children circle the two pictures in each row that have names that rhyme.

Tell children to listen to the sounds in the word at. Model blending the sounds to say the word at, /aaat/,
at. Point out your mouth position for each sound. Have children repeat. Then tell children you will say the
sounds in more words. Have them blend the sounds to say each word. Then have them draw a picture of
the word: /m//a//n/; /c//a//t/; /k//a//p/; /d//a//d/.

Encourage children to read the story to a family member or a friend. Have children set a purpose for reading, such as finding out about
what the different animals do. Explain that each word in a sentence is
separated from the next word by a space. Point to the space between
