Phonological Awareness: Recognize Rhyme


Remind children that words that rhyme have the same ending sounds. Now point to and say the names of
the pictures in each row on the page. Have children circle the two pictures in each row that have names
that rhyme.

Phonemic Awareness: Phoneme Segmentation


Tell children to listen as you say the word kit. Say each sound in the word kit, /k//i//t/. Then blend the
sounds together to say the word kit. Explain that there are three sounds in the word. Now say the name
of each picture. Then tell children to say the sounds in each picture’s name. Encourage them to count the
number of sounds they hear and color in a box for each sound.

Phonics: Minimal Contrasts
Tell children that when you change one letter in a word, you make a new word. Write the words Kim and
kit. Explain that by changing the m in Kim to a t, you make the word kit. Have children read the first word
in each row. Tell them to draw a line under the new word that is formed when one letter in the word is
changed. Then write the words lick, lock, sock, and dock on the board and have children decode them.

Model the Read/Spell/Write routine using the word she. Have children repeat the routine. Repeat with the

Grammar: Proper Nouns


Remind children that a proper noun names someone. The name Amy is a proper name because it is
someone's name. Then read each sentence and point to and name the pictures. Tell children to circle the
words that should begin with a capital letter because they are proper nouns. Tell children to refer back to
a piece of writing that they did during the week and make sure they used proper nouns correctly.

Tell children to listen as you read aloud the sentences. Have them rewrite each sentence so it shows correct
capitalization and punctuation. Use gestures to clarify meaning. Then tell children to refer back to a piece
of writing they did during the week and check that they used correct capitalization and end punctuation.
Encourage children to use spelling patterns to help them write and to check that they spelled high-frequency
words correctly.

Encourage children to read the story to a family member or a friend. Have children set a purpose for reading, such as finding out what Dad

Have children tell what the w represents and what was represents.
