Phonological Awareness: Count and Blend Syllables


Point to a pencil and say its name. Then say each syllable in the word. Model blending the syllables
together to say pencil. Model clapping for each syllable in the word. Point out that there are two parts
or syllables in pencil. Tell children that you will write the number 2 on the board because pencil has two
syllables. Point to and name the remaining pictures. Tell children to say the syllables in each word and
then blend them together to say the whole word. Have them write a number on the line to show how
many parts or syllables they hear.

Phonemic Awareness: /h/


Point to and say the name of the picture of the hammer. Tell children that the word hammer begins with
the /h/ sound. Have children repeat, hammer, /h/. Now point to and say the names of the rest of the
pictures on the page. Tell children to circle the pictures that have names that begin with the /h/ sound as
in hammer. Tell children to look at the pictures in each row from left to right and work their way down the
page from top to bottom.

Phonemic Awareness: Phoneme Categorization

Explain to children that a pronoun takes the place of someone's name or a noun. Tell them that the word he
