Part 2 – Adding Numbers Step by Step (Worked Examples
& Notes)
Created for Dhruv — October 15, 2025
Learning Goals
• Learn a step-by-step method to compute triangular numbers without confusing steps.
• Follow two worked examples and get class-ready notes.
Step-by-Step Method
1) Start with 1. 2) Add the next counting number, then the next, and so on. Keep a small
column of results.
Worked example 1: To make the 6th triangular number — write: 1 → 1; add 2 → 3; add 3 → 6;
add 4 → 10; add 5 → 15; add 6 → 21. So the 6th is 21.
Worked Example 2
Find the 9th triangular number quickly: continue from known ones: 28 (7th) → add 8 → 36 (8th)
→ add 9 → 45 (9th). So 45.
