ASSIGNMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED
ASSIGNMENT 3 (CO2) DATE OF SUBMISSION: 08.10.2025
1. What is a bus? Specify the function of address and data bus. What is the direction of information
flow in an address bus? Why is the data bus bidirectional?
2. List the four operations commonly performed by the MPU.
3. List the four control signals commonly used in 8085.

the flag register.
5. In the opcode fetch cycle, what are the control signals asserted by the 8085 to enable the memory
buffer.
6. With example explain the different addressing modes of 8085 and the different types of
instruction. Give one example each for data transfer instructions, arithmetic instructions, logic
instructions and branch instructions
7. What are tri state devices? Why are they essential in bus-oriented systems?
8. What are the functions of the Program Counter and Stack Pointer? Why are both 16-bit registers.
9. How many address lines are required to address 2MB of memory?
10. If the memory chip is 2048 X 8 bits, how many chips are required to make 16 KB of memory?
11. If the memory chip is 1024X 4 bits, how many chips are required to make 2 KB of memory?
12. The memory map of a 4K byte memory chip begins at 2000 H. Specify the address of the last
location.
13. The memory address of the last location of a 1 K byte chip is FBFF H. Find the starting address.
14. In the figure, what is the memory range of Fig (a). Explain how the memory range can be
changed by modifying the chip select as given in Fig (b). Eliminate all the inverters and connect
all the address lines A8 to A15 directly to the NAND gate. Specify the memory map.
15. Given the figure below. Specify the output line that goes low if the input to the 3-to-8 decoder is
given as
A7 A6 A5 A4 A3 A2 A1 A0
1 1 1 1 0 1 1 1
16. What is the output of the decoder if the key K6 is pushed?
17. List the high order, low order and don’t care address line in the figure given. How many pages of
memory does the chip include? Identify the memory address if A11 is at logic 0. Specify the entire
memory map and explain the significance of the don’t care address lines on memory address.
18. Explain the function pf ALE and IO/M̅ signals of the 8085 microprocessors.
19. Explain the need to demultiplex the bus AD07 – AD0.
20. List the sequence of events that occur when the microprocessor reads from memory.
21. If the 8085 has fetched the machine code from located at 205F H, specify the program counter
contents.
22. The instruction LDA 2050 H is 3-byte instruction with 4 machine cycles and 13 T states. Identify
the fourth machine cycle and its control signals.
23. Connect the line O6 of the decoder to the C̅E̅ of the memory chip instead of O0 and identify the
memory map.
Connect A15 to active high enable signal E3 of the decoder and the ground E1.
24. Design a seven segment LED output port with address F5H using a 74LS138 3-8 decoder, a
74LS20 4-input NAND gate, a 74LS02 NOR gate and a common anode seven segment LED.
