MOC 12 – Casualty Care – Ten Second Triage (TST)

Focus
Personnel involved in this practical training must demonstrate an ability to:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


• Correctly Don appropriate PPE as required
• Demonstrate TST to a variety of casualties with
differing injuries
• Correctly apply the appropriate snap band as
required e.g. to the wrist
• Demonstrate suitable reviews of each Casualty
in line with the 15 minute review period
• Relocate to a Casualty Collection Point (CCP) as
soon as possible after TST has been completed
in order of the priority on their triage bands

Scenario
As an operational crew conduct a scenario enabling the practice of TST
At one pump stations due to limitations on numbers, it would be advantageous to conduct alongside a
neighbouring station. If this is not possible a table top exercise may suffice using any of the below information;
Casualty 1 Casualty 2
• Adult female • Adult male
• Lying on the floor • Sat against a wall
• Severe bleeding stab wound to right thigh • No severe bleeding
• Talking
• 7 x stab wounds to back

Life Saving Intervention = Tourniquet Life Saving Intervention = None


Casualty 3 Casualty 4
• Adult female
• Lying on the floor • Adult male with an obvious head injury
• No severe bleeding • Lying down on his back
• Talking • No severe bleeding
• 2 x stab wounds to chest • Not talking
• Snoring

Life Saving Intervention = None Life Saving Intervention = Recovery Position


Casualty 5 Casualty 6
• Adult female
• Runs up to responder • Adult male with gun shot wound to head
• Grazes to palms after falling • Face down in the street
• Talking • No severe bleeding
• Not talking
• Not breathing

Life Saving Intervention = None Life Saving Intervention = Recovery Position


Casualty 7 Casualty 8
• Adult male • Adult female, struck by large
• Sat on the floor vehicle
• Severely bleeding groin injury • Lying on the pavement
• No severe bleeding
• Awake but staring and silent

• 12 week old male, carried by • Adult male with a head injury

General Guidance

• Identify a suitable training venue and complete any necessary risk assessments
• Complete the relevant booking process to secure the venue for your training
• Ensure established safe systems of work are followed
• If undertaking ‘off‐site’ training complete an appropriate risk assessment
• Refer to Technical Data Sheets and associated guidance provided on the CDC, Mi – Learning
• Complete MOC6 – Casualty Care – Ten Second Triage eLearning on mi learning as part of a MoC
requirement

At one pump stations consideration should be made to combining alongside a nearby station to fulfil a more
realistic scenario.
Where this is not possible the use of a table top exercise could be used to replicate a scenario.
