HOMEWORK 2
Calculate the variations of the parameters asked with sludge age in an activated sludge
systems treating the wastewater where the characteristics are given below.
Draw the graphs:
a) Net yield coefficient (YNH) vs Sludge Age (X)
b) Effluent soluble biodegradable COD, and ST=S+SI concentrations vs Sludge Age (X)
c) 3 components of sludge production seperately (PXH+PXE+PXI ) and Total Sludge production
(PXT= PXH+PXE+PXI) for unit wastewater flows vs Sludge Age (X)
d) The sludge mass which can be sustained in the reactor (MX=PX. X) for unit wastewater
flow (for 3 sludge components and total) vs Sludge Age (X)
e) Active fraction of the sludge (PXH/ PXT ) vs Sludge Age (X)
f) Oxygen Requirement of the system vs Sludge Age (X)
Comment on the results.
μ̂ =3 d-1, KS=40 mg/l COD, YH=0.45 g VSS/g COD, bH=0.20 d-1, fE=0.2
Total COD=500 mg/l, SI1=30 mg/l XI1=70 mg/l
Note: For the graphs, the range for sludge for the graphs is between 4-20 days:
