CHAPTER 5 – The effects of using IT
Microprocessor-controlled devices
Microprocessor-controlled unit is a tiny computer chip that is programmed to complete a specific set of tasks.
Microprocessor-controlled device is an electronic device which has a microprocessor embedded in it and this
microprocessor controls the device.
Microprocessor controlled devices are used in a wide variety of applications, including:
o Household appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and ovens.
o Office equipment, such as printers, scanners, and photocopiers.
o Industrial machineries, such as robots and assembly lines.
o Transport systems, such as autonomous vehicles and automatic control of traffic lights.

Advantages and disadvantages of autonomous vehicles
Advantages Disadvantages
Safer because human error is removed Very expensive systems to set up in the first place
Better for the environment Can be hacked and controlled
Reduces traffic congestion Software updates would need to be done carefully
Reduces travel times The vehicle will have to be always well-maintained
Enables stress-free parking for motorists Could lead to unemployment (of drivers)
