Topic: Ratio

1. What Is a Ratio?

A ratio compares two or more quantities of the same kind by division.

It shows how many times one quantity is compared to another.

Notation:
A ratio can be written in three ways:

 Using a colon → 3 : 2
 Using the word “to” → 3 to 2
 As a fraction → 3/2

All mean the same thing.

2. Example of a Ratio

If a class has 12 boys and 8 girls,

the ratio of boys to girls is:
→ 12 : 8

This can be simplified by dividing both terms by their highest common factor (HCF).

HCF of 12 and 8 is 4.
So,
12 ÷ 4 : 8 ÷ 4 = 3 : 2

✅ Simplified ratio = 3 : 2

That means for every 3 boys, there are 2 girls.

3. Simplifying Ratios

To simplify a ratio:

1. Express both quantities in the same units (if needed).

2. Divide both sides by their HCF.

Example:
Convert 500 m : 2 km
👉 2 km = 2000 m
So ratio = 500 : 2000
Divide by 500 → 1 : 4

✅ Simplified ratio = 1 : 4

4. Equivalent Ratios

Just like equivalent fractions, ratios can be scaled up or down by multiplying or dividing both
sides by the same number.

Example:
1:3=2:6=3:9

Each of these ratios shows the same relationship.

5. Ratio in Simplifying Quantities

You can use ratios to simplify parts of a group.

Example:
In a bag of candies, red : blue : yellow = 2 : 3 : 5
If there are 100 candies total,
Sum of parts = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 parts
Each part = 100 ÷ 10 = 10 candies
So:

 Red = 2 × 10 = 20 candies
 Blue = 3 × 10 = 30 candies
 Yellow = 5 × 10 = 50 candies
✅ Always find total parts, then value per part.

6. Sharing in a Given Ratio

Sometimes you need to divide an amount in a given ratio.

Example:
Divide $60 in the ratio 2 : 3

Step 1: Total parts = 2 + 3 = 5

Step 2: Each part = $60 ÷ 5 = $12
Step 3:

 First share = 2 × 12 = $24

 Second share = 3 × 12 = $36

✅ Final answer: $24 and $36

7. Applications of Ratio

Ratios are used in real life for:

 Mixing ingredients (e.g., 1 part syrup : 4 parts water)

 Maps and scale drawings (e.g., 1 cm : 5 km)
 Speeds and densities (e.g., 60 km : 1 hour)
 Comparing quantities (e.g., student : teacher ratio = 20 : 1)

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Forgetting to use the same units

❌ Writing ratios in the wrong order
❌ Not simplifying the ratio fully
❌ Adding ratios directly (can’t do that!)

9. Quick Practice

Q: Divide 45 pencils in the ratio 2 : 3.

A:
Total parts = 5
Each part = 45 ÷ 5 = 9
→ First = 2 × 9 = 18
→ Second = 3 × 9 = 27

✅ Answer: 18 pencils and 27 pencils.

10. Extension: Ratio vs Fraction

 A fraction compares a part to a whole.

 A ratio compares a part to another part (not necessarily the whole).

Example:
In a class of 12 boys and 8 girls:

 Ratio of boys : girls = 12 : 8 = 3 : 2

 Fraction of boys = 12 / (12 + 8) = 12/20 = 3/5
