C. Lesson Proper

Simple Interest is the additional amount charged to the borrower for a specific
period of time after borrowing money. The amount of money that was borrowed
is called the principal.

The Formula to compute for the interest is

I =P × R ×T
where I = interest
P = principal
R = interest rate
T = length of time the money is borrowed

Hence the total amount that should be paid back by the borrower is the principal,
together with the interest.

A=P+ I
where A=¿total amount to be paid
P=¿principal
I =¿interest
Example 1:
Lin borrowed ₱600,000.00 from a lending cooperative to buy a house. The cost of the
house and interest are to be paid in 5 years. If the rate of interest is 7% per annum
(year), solve for the
A. interest that should be paid in 5th year, and
B. total amount that should be paid at the end of the 5th year.

Solution:
P=¿ ₱600,000.00
R=¿7%
T =¿ 5 years
A.
I =P × R ×T
I =¿ ₱600,000.00 × 0.07 × 5
I =¿ ₱ 210,000

The interest to be paid by Lin at the end of the 5th year is ₱ 210,000

B. The total amount to be paid by Lin at the end of the 5th year is the principal of
₱600,000, along with the interest of ₱210,000.
₱600,000 + ₱210,000 = ₱810,000
The total amount that Lin needs to pay after 5 years is ₱810,000.
Example 2: Tomie bought 4 sets of computers at ₱25,000 each. He paid for them
through a loan from a friend. If his friend charges an interest rate of 2% per month,
how much does Tomie need to pay his friend at the end of the year?
Solution:
P=¿ ₱100,000
R=¿ 0.02
T =¿ 12 months
A=¿ P × (1 + R × T)
A=¿ ₱100,000 × (1 + 0.02 × 12)
A=¿ ₱100,000 × (1 + 0.24)
A=¿ ₱100,000 × (1.24)
A=¿ ₱124,000
Tomie needs to pay ₱124,000.00 to his friend at the end of the year.
Example 3: How much must Josh invest for 4 years for his money to earn ₱45,000 if
the interest is 7.5% per year?
Solution:
I =¿₱45,000.00
R=7.5 %
T =¿4 years
45,000
P=
0.075 × 4
45,000
P=
0.3
P=¿₱ 150,000
Josh needs to invest ₱ 150,000.00 for 4 years at 7.5% interest to earn ₱45,000.00.
