(OLD)1.
Another important point of renewable energy sources is their independence in improving energy and
reducing non-renewable energy sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal. This change promotes
environmental sustainability and energy security, particularly in areas that consume a lot of fossil fuels.
The deployment of decentralized energy solutions, such as piezo-electric energy harvesting, focuses on
the goal of implementing localized small-scale power systems that can work without relying on the
electrical grid. On the other hand, piezoelectric tiles can work as self-powered sensors, which can get
better movement patterns to be useful.
1.3
The ideal setting for deploying such energy-harvesting technologies is in urban areas, which are
characterized by constant activity and movement. The high population of foot traffic represents a usable
and echo-friendly source of energy from mechanical energy. Also, it's relevant in densely populated areas
where there are a lot of individuals who walk through transportation stations, malls, parks, and
universities.
The operation of integrating piezo tiles into existing infrastructure may be a challenge that causes
feasibility issues and cost-effectiveness for installing them. Those pavements can be embedded within the
system without significant changes to the infrastructure. Once installed, it will take advantage by
operating automatically with a low need of maintenance rate. The power stored and generated can be
consumed in low-power applications such as traffic lights, street lighting, and chargeable portable
devices.
The piezoelectric can also serve functions in the symbolic and educational sector by visualizing the
generated human footsteps into electricity by raising awareness in the public sector of the importance of
renewable energy sources and the goal to achieve sustainability. This also improves the cultural
framework of environmental consciousness and changes the way the younger generations improve their
behavioral changes by taking into consideration climate change and ecological degradation.
1.4
The piezoelectric tiles also consider scalability. Those tiles can be customized by the application, need of
use, and cost of a given project for both small and large-scale installations. Also, it attracts governance
initiatives and the private sectors to achieve green energy which aligns with Egypt's goals to reduce the
dependency of non-renewable energy sources.
To satisfy the global rush for clean energy, innovation of renewable energy harvesting techniques
becomes essential for countries to reduce their waste and decrease usage of non-renewable energy
resources. Also, it aligns with developing them in the developing smart cities and new technological cities
which aim to improve quality of life, scalability, sustainability, and efficiency. By converting human
activities to contribute to generating energy piezoelectric tiles can have the potential of everyday actions
to address some potential challenges that the world is suffering from.
(New)1.5 innovation and outlook
The world is now changing rapidly with AI and nanotechnology. Future piezoelectric tiles are expected to
be more reliable, efficient, and cost-optimized by implementing machine learning algorithms and flexible
polymers could be a game changer for enhancing performance and greater the adaptability of the tile in
real-world applications. Those materials can be installed in wearable devices. Also, the rehearsals include
trial and error to enhance piezoelectric systems so they can handle heavy power applications and huge
workloads.
1.6 Working principle of piezo energy conversion
The operation of converting energy is based on the piezoelectric effect, a phenomenon where certain
materials generate electrical charges when pressure from the foot is applied to the tile. Most commonly,
the materials used are PDVF and PZT (Lead zirconate titanate), which we used in our project to enhance
power output, which is known for its strong piezoelectric properties. When a person steps on the tile, the
exerted pressure creates an internal crystal lattice of the piezo material. This deformation replaces positive
and negative charge centers within the material, resulting in the generation of voltage across its surface.
This generated voltage is AC (Alternating current), normally known by low amplitude so it must require
rectification and voltage regulation before it can be sent or stored, which we used an integrated IC to
perform this circuit action. To increase efficiency, we connected the sensors in parallel to enhance the
current output. This system can be a very good replacement for non-renewable energy sources.
1.7 Advantages of piezoelectric tile energy harvesting
Piezoelectric tiles show numerous advantages in functionality, design, and sustainability. The most
important factor is that it's fuel-free operation, so it doesn’t require any external fuel sources. They have
low-maintenance options. Their compact design makes it accessible, easy to install, and replaces high-
footfall areas or urban infrastructure. Also, at a large scale, it could provide scalability as more tiles could
be added to large areas and increase the energy output. They also operate silently without causing any
noise and can be integrated with other renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind to form
energy. Also, they are practical for real-time applications for powering traffic lights, Finally, this makes
their potential in smart cities immersive and good for off-grid scenarios.
1.8 Limitations and Challenges
Despite the potential of piezoelectric technology, some limitations and challenges hinder its adoption
around the world. The most significant issue is the low energy output, as it varies between sensor
materials and types, so a single tile output generates a small amount of tile per step. The efficiency also
depends on the foot traffic frequencies and the amount of applied force, so we chose to implement our
project in high footfall areas and maximize Single tile voltage and current output to ensure that there will
be enough output to power small applications. Also, in large-scale tiles is connected tightly to enhance
output, but there will be a tradeoff with the cost as the technology is still in the research phase. Also, the
operation of enhancing existing infrastructure could be difficult and expensive, but with a good
retrofitting plan, it could be easily maintained. Finally, the balance of aesthetic design with electrical
functionality will be a critical challenge in worldwide urban deployment.
1.9 Motivation behind the project
With the large population of Egypt, the energy demand is increasing every day, and the government aims
to develop the infrastructure as one of its priorities. This project will be a localized solution to the energy
demand for all Egyptian citizens. The project's goal is to take advantage of generating energy from
walking, which can be used either for low-power systems or to contribute to a larger load while reducing
the environmental impact. The project also doesn’t promote having a clean energy source alone but also
aligns with Egypt's sustainable development goals and energy independence, which took a step in
reducing the reliance on conventional energy sources and making a positive impact through a safer
environment.

3.2 Manufacturability
The operation of designing piezoelectric tiles for Manufacturability involves making a balance between
cost, performance, and ease of production. Normal manufacturing techniques can be adapted to balance
mass production, such as printing piezoelectric films and deploying ceramic wafers in the composite
layer. There are some challenges we faced in production, like a lack of sensors, durability of sensors, and
material quality. Also, we chose the rhombus design to ensure that all extracted effort is used in the
footstep of the tile to generate maximum power. Modulated designs can make the scaling-up production
process easier by allowing the manufacturing of the tiles in a standard size, and, of course, automation
can reduce time and cost. Also, it can improve precision. With that standardized model, we can meet
demand for large-scale deployment in urban environments with high footfall areas like malls and train
stations.
3.3 Ethics
The Ethics of implementing piezoelectric tiles depends on durability, accessibility, and the equitable
distribution of benefits. We have ensured that the tile is safe for any human being who can use the tile and
not harmful, especially to people with wheelchairs. Also, we chose materials that are friendly to the
environment to achieve sustainability, as it is one of our goals to reach the SDGs. Additionally, the
project ensured the use of greenwashing, where the technology must be specified as a promoted
sustainable solution for energy replacement. These factors could be a good balance between innovation
and social responsibility.
3.4 social and political impact
The Social and Political impact of this project could be significant. First, on the social side, sustainability
could be achieved by ensuring eco-conscious acts in urban areas. However, the operation of tracking
pedestrian movement raises privacy issues, and this is called digital surveillance. Taking into
consideration that data is collected without consent. Piezoelectric may also provide job displacement in
all energy sectors. Politicians may employ these technologies to show progress, although all questions
remain about long-term energy efficiency and social inclusivity. On a broader scale, it would encourage
global competitiveness as countries will want to have clean energy source innovation. Finally, the
potential international collaboration of the shared technology and resources would shape future political
dynamics in sustainability and energy demand.
3.5. health and safety
The health and safety rules of piezoelectric tiles are versatile. Firstly, human safety from being harmed by
the tile must be slip-resistant to prevent accidents, especially in high footfall areas. Also, durability plays
a vital role is important to ensure that the parts of the tile don’t wear out quickly, as the tile is designed to
span 5 years before being destroyed and cause tripping hazards. Also, The Tile must be able to be
accessible to all pressures and weights without cracking or destroying the tile. On the electrical path, we
ensured that the tile is accurately isolated from the electrical component to prevent electrical shocks.
Energy delivered or stored must be in a safe manner to avoid harmful electrical spikes. Additionally, we
ensured that the material used is not hazardous or toxic to both employees and the environment. Finally,
the installation and repair of the piezo tiles must be done by trained professionals to ensure safety
standards and not introduce hazards during installation or maintenance.
3.6 sustainability
As we said above, sustainability must balance long-term availability as an energy solution. We cancelled
the dependence on fossil fuels as if it were implemented wieldy, it will sustain the urban environment,
which helps in creating energy-positive buildings. Also, the aspect of energy storage is crucial; energy
storage systems like capacitors or batteries must be integrated to store energy for later use. To solve this
problem, we suggest using eco-friendly batteries with long life-cycle operation, which can enhance the
system’s overall environmental benefits, Moreover, the involvement of the community is key to ensuring
that local communities are educated on how piezoelectric works and how to contribute to achieving its
effectiveness. Whether implementing high footfall areas or supporting green initiatives. This approach
encourages an intelligent and clever form of sustainability where everyone should benefit from clean
energy sources.
