Chapter 2

Respiration and Energy from food

SAMAH REDA
Respiration and Energy from food:
• In most of living organisms, including humans, the energy for life
comes from a chemical reaction between food and oxygen.
• This reaction is called aerobic respiration:
• Aerobic means in the presence of air or oxygen.
• You can live for a few days without food, but you will die without air
( oxygen) in a few minutes.
• So oxygen in the air is very vital to you.

SAMAH REDA
What happens to your body when you
exercise?
• Sometimes our bodies don't get enough oxygen from air while we are
running a race or doing exercises .
• Because when we exert effort our muscles will need more energy for
movement, but oxygen can't get to your cells fast enough.
• What will happen now?
• The body gets this energy by breaking glucose down, without oxygen,
into a substance called lactic acid.
• Now you can run and move as you like.

SAMAH REDA
An-aerobic respiration:
• These lactic acid builds up in your muscles, causing your muscles to
feel tired and may get cramp----it all depend on how fit you are!
• After the exercise you usually gasp ( taking your breath very quickly)
for air taking in lots of oxygen.
• Your heart will beat faster to get more oxygen to the cells.
• The lactic acid is broken slowly into carbon dioxide gas and water.
• Then your heart rate and breathing will return to normal.

Aerobic Respiration:
• Oxygen is taken to the cells of the body by the blood.
• Energy is released by the reaction of the dissolved food with oxygen.

• Carbon dioxide gas and water are taken back to be breathed out into
the air.

SAMAH REDA
Summary
Breathing is the movement of air passing in and out of the lungs.

Humans and animals take in oxygen gas from air and give off carbon dioxide gas.

The rate of breathing changes according to the body needs.

If we exert effort like running or exercising our breathing and heart beats rate will
increase.
When we take in oxygen it break down our food and release energy for us.

SAMAH REDA
Summary
If we don't receive enough oxygen while exercising our body will break down glucose sugar stored in
our muscles to release lactic acid and energy.
This lactic acid will make us feel tired and may cause cramps .

After we breath and get enough oxygen in our bodies again our heart beat and breathing rate will
return back to normal.
We have two types of respiration:

1- Aerobic respiration : takes place in the presence of oxygen in our bodies

2- An-Aerobic respiration : takes place in the absence of oxygen.
