3■■ READING: The Hidden Power of Hobbies

Most people think of hobbies as a way to pass the time, but psychologists say they play a
much bigger role in our wellbeing. Hobbies help us disconnect from stress, build new
skills, and even boost confidence. People who paint or play instruments often describe a
“flow” state – a feeling of total focus and joy. Others prefer active hobbies like hiking or
cycling, which improve both body and mind. Hobbies can even boost careers. Employers
value creativity, discipline, and curiosity – qualities often developed through hobbies. So
next time you pick up your camera, guitar, or running shoes, remember: you’re investing in
yourself! Comprehension questions: 1. What benefits of hobbies are mentioned? 2. What
is a “flow state”? 3. How can hobbies influence someone’s career? 4. Which examples of
hobbies are given?
