Transformer Study and Construction Guide

The project aims to study and construct a simple step-down transformer, focusing on its working principle, construction, and operation. It involves apparatus like an iron core, copper wire, and measuring instruments, and operates on the principle of mutual induction. The results showed successful voltage reduction and satisfactory efficiency within experimental limits.

Title of Project: To Study and Construct a

Transformer
Name of Student: _______________________
Roll Number: _______________________
Date of Submission: _______________________

2. Aim of Project
To study the working principle, construction, and operation of a transformer and to construct a
simple step-down transformer.

3. Apparatus Required
1. Iron core 2. Copper wire (Primary and Secondary winding) 3. Power supply (AC source) 4.
Voltmeter 5. Ammeter 6. Load resistor 7. Connecting wires 8. Insulating tape

4. Principle/Theory
A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction, where a change in current in one coil
induces an electromotive force (EMF) in another coil kept close to it. It is an AC device used to
increase or decrease the voltage level depending on the turns ratio of the primary and secondary
coils.

5. Construction with Labeled Diagram

A transformer consists of two coils — the primary coil and the secondary coil — wound on a
laminated soft iron core. The primary coil is connected to the AC supply, and the secondary coil is
connected to the load. The number of turns in each coil determines whether the transformer is
step-up or step-down.

(Insert labeled diagram of a transformer here.)

6. Working
When alternating current flows through the primary winding, it creates an alternating magnetic flux
in the iron core. This flux links with the secondary winding and induces an EMF according to
Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. Depending on the number of turns in both coils, the
output voltage may be higher (step-up) or lower (step-down) than the input voltage.

7. Observations
1. Input Voltage (V■) = ____ V 2. Output Voltage (V■) = ____ V 3. Turns Ratio (N■/N■) = ____ 4.
Efficiency (%) = ____
8. Calculations
Turns Ratio = N■ / N■ = V■ / V■ Efficiency = (Output Power / Input Power) × 100%

9. Result / Conclusion
The constructed transformer successfully stepped down the voltage as per the designed turns ratio.
The efficiency was found to be satisfactory within experimental limits.

10. Applications
1. Used in power transmission and distribution. 2. Used in adapters and chargers. 3. Used in
voltage regulation devices. 4. Used in audio and signal processing equipment.

11. Graphs (if any)

(Graph between Input Voltage and Output Voltage can be plotted to show linear relation.)
