 Improve the general welfare (standard of living) for people in their care.
 Collects tax revenues for spending on essential services e.g. education,
healthcare, infrastructure, national security
 3 different levels: locally, nationally, internationally

1. The role of local government


 Refers to the authorities of a particular country, region or district
 Uses tax revenues to fund spending on the local community e.g. street lighting,
public libraries, local schools, public roads, hospitals, social housing, public
parks, refuse collection
 Central gov. gives local gov. funding to spend on public and merit goods

2. The role of national government/central government


 Refers to the central authority that takes overall responsibility for
controlling/ruling a country/territory
 Makes decisions about how to achieve the country’s
