CHAPTER-1 :: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Irrigation is a crucial practice in agriculture that involves providing water to crops to ensure
their optimal growth and productivity. It plays a vital role in areas where rainfall is insufficient
or irregular. By supplying water directly to the plant roots, irrigation helps meet the water
requirements of crops throughout their growth stages, reducing the risk of drought stress and
crop failure. There are various irrigation methods employed in agriculture, including surface
irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, and drip irrigation. Each method has its advantages and is chosen
based on factors such as crop type, soil characteristics, and water availability. Efficient
irrigation management is essential to conserve water resources and minimize wastage.
Technologies like soil moisture sensors and automated irrigation systems help farmers optimize
water usage by delivering the right amount of water at the right time. Irrigation also enables
farmers to cultivate crops in regions with arid or semi-arid climates, expanding agricultural
production and ensuring food security. However, it's important to balance irrigation practices
with environmental sustainability, avoiding over-irrigation that can lead to waterlogging, soil
salinization, and negative impacts on ecosystems.

EVOLUTION OF IRRIGATION
India is the seventh biggest country in the world and has the second biggest
population - over 1.2bn people. It’s one of the world’s fastest-growing [Link] the bulk
of its rainfall in the monsoon season - between June and October - India has had to develop
irrigation systems to provide reliable sources of water all year [Link] schemes in India
include networks of canals that draw water from the country’s rivers. There are also
groundwater systems and projects that include rainwater harvesting. Indian irrigation systems
are mentioned in ancient texts dating back to the third century BC.

The country’s oldest dam is the Kallanai Dam – also known as the Grand
Anicut. The scheme was built over the Kaveri river in the south of the country around 200
[Link] scheme is the fourth-oldest water regulation system in the world still in use. It was
remodelled by British military engineers in [Link] 19th century saw the construction of
many other British-engineered irrigation systems across the country.
The opium produced was exported to China. Around 500,000 acres in the fertile Ganges plains
were devoted to the industry by 1900.

India's irrigation schemes covered about 22.6m hectares by 1951 – by then, mostly devoted to

food crops. By 2014, around 48% of agricultural land in the country was considered reliably

irrigated - around two thirds of cultivated land in the country still depended on monsoon rainfall.

IMPACTS OF IRRIGATION IN AGRICULURE FIELD

[Link] Agricultural Productivity

• Irrigation significantly increases agricultural productivity by providing water to crops during

dry [Link] allows farmers to cultivate more land and grow multiple crops throughout the
year.

[Link] Resource Depletion

• Irrigation can lead to the depletion of water resources, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.
Over-extraction of groundwater for irrigation purposes can cause aquifer depletion and
longterm water scarcity.

3. Soil Salinization

• Over-irrigation or poor drainage can result in soil salinization, which is the accumulation of
salts in soil.

• Salinization negatively affects crop growth and reduces agricultural productivity

[Link] Impacts

• Irrigation can lead to environmental impacts such as water pollution from agricultural runoff
and the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides.

The government is taking several steps to address the challenges facing agriculture.
These include:

➢ Investing in irrigation facilities.

➢ Providing access to modern agricultural input.
➢ Promoting the use of improved farming practices.
➢ Developing an efficient marketing system.
CHAPTER-2 :: COMMUNITY SERVICE PART

Detailed Report:

On day-1:
For better implementation understanding the curriculum of CSP is necessary. So, I have
studied the guidelines of community service project and understood what to be done in
the fourth week.

On day-2:
On this day I learnt about the importance of irrigation.
1. Insufficient and uncertain rainfall adversely affects agriculture. Droughts and famines are
caused due to low rainfall. Irrigation helps to increase productivity even in low rainfall.
2. The productivity on irrigated land is higher as compared to the un-irrigated land.
• Multiple cropping is not possible in India because the rainy season is specific in most the
regions. However, the climate supports cultivation throughout the year. Irrigation facilities
make it possible to grow more than one crop in most of the areas of the country.

On day-3:
On this day, I have gone through the various kinds of irrigation and gained some
Knowledge on different kinds of crops then after analysing I have selected the irrigation

Describe the problems you have identified in the community

In my projects several key problems have been identified that require attention and targeted solutions. These
problems include:

[Link] water supply: In some areas, there may not be enough water available for irrigation, leading to
water scarcity and inadequate irrigation for crops.

[Link] irrigation systems: Outdated or poorly designed irrigation systems can result in water wastage
and uneven distribution, leading to overwatering in some areas and underwatering in others.

[Link] maintenance and operational costs: Maintaining and operating irrigation systems can be expensive,
especially for small-scale farmers who may struggle to afford the necessary repairs and maintenance.

[Link] impacts: Improper irrigation practices can lead to soil erosion, water pollution, and the
depletion of water sources, causing harm to the environment and surrounding ecosystems.

[Link] of knowledge and training: Many farmers may not have access to proper training or information on
efficient irrigation techniques, leading to suboptimal water management practices.

[Link] access to irrigation infrastructure: In some regions, farmers may not have access to reliable
irrigation infrastructure, limiting their ability to irrigate their crops effectively.

Addressing these challenges requires a combination of technical solutions, community support, and education.
By promoting sustainable irrigation practices, providing training and resources, and improving access to
irrigation infrastructure, we can help overcome these problems and support farmers in maximizing their
agricultural productivity while minimizing the impacts.
SHORT TERM ACTION PLAN:

[Link] a comprehensive assessment: Evaluate the current irrigation systems in

the area to identify any inefficiencies, leaks, or areas in need of repair or improvement.

[Link] training and education: Organize workshops and training sessions to

educate farmers on best practices for efficient irrigation, including proper scheduling, water
management, and maintenance techniques.

[Link] water conservation: Promote the use of water-saving technologies such

as drip irrigation or sprinkler systems, which can reduce water wastage and improve
efficiency.

[Link] monitoring systems: Install sensors or meters to measure soil moisture

levels and water usage, allowing farmers to make informed decisions about irrigation
scheduling and optimize water resources.

[Link] farmer cooperatives: Encourage collaboration among farmers to share

resources, equipment, and knowledge related to irrigation practices. This can help reduce
costs and improve overall efficiency.

[Link] financial support: Explore funding options and subsidies to assist farmers

in upgrading or repairing their irrigation infrastructure, making it more efficient and

sustainable.
