Chapter-Moving charges and magnetism


1. Using Ampere's circuital law find an expression for the magnetic field at a point on the
axis of a long solenoid with closely wound turns.

2. (a) Derive an expression for the force between two long parallel current carrying
conductors.
(b) Use this expression to define Sl unit of current.

3. A wire AB is carrying a steady current of 12A and is lying on the table. Another wire CD
carrying 5A is held directly above AB at a height of 1mm. Find the mass per unit length of
the wire CD so that it remains suspended at its position when left free. Mention the
direction of current in CD.

4. Derive an expression for torque acting on a rectangular current carrying loop kept in a
uniform magnetic field B. Indicate the direction of torque acting on the loop.

5. An oc particle and a proton of same kinetic energy are in turn allowed to pass through a
magnetic field B, acting normal to the direction of motion of particles. Calculate the ratio
of radii of the circular paths described by them.

6. A circular coil of N turns and diameterd carries current I. It is unwound and rewound to
make another coil of diameter 2d, current I remaining the same. Calculate the ratio of
the magnetic moments of the new coil and the original coil.

7. Draw a labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer. Prove that in radial magnetic
field, the deflection of the coil is directly proportional to current flowing in the coil.

8. a) Why is it necessary to introduce a cylindrical soft iron core inside the coil of
galvanometer.
b) Define the terms current sensitivity and voltage sensitivity of a galvanometer.
9. With the help of a circuit, a) show how a moving coil galvanometer can be converted into
an ammeter of a given range and b) show how a moving coil galvanometer can be converted
into a voltmeter of a given range.

10. To convert a given galvanometer into a voltmeter of ranges 2V,V& V/2 volt, resistances
R1, Rz, Rg ohm respectively are required to be connected in series with the galvanometer.
Obtain the relationship between R1, R2, Ra.

1. Draw a ray diagram showing refraction of a ray of light through a triangular glass
prism. Hence obtain the relation for the refractive index (u)in terms of angle of

microscope. Derive an expression for its total magnification when image is
formed at near point.

3. Define power of a lens. Write its unit. Deduce the expression for equivalent focal
length for two thin lenses kept in contact coaxially.
4. A ray of light passes through an equilateral prism such that its angle of
incidence is equal to angle of emergence and the latter is equal to % th of
angle of prism. Calculate the angle of deviation.

5. A ray PQ incident on the refracting face BA is

such that AQ=AR. If the angle of prism A=60° and

6. The magnifying power of an astronomical telescope in normal adjustment is

Find the focal lengths of two lenses.
