through design in a highly interconnected
world.
Criteria A – Inquiring and Analysing

Strand 1 – Explain and justify the need for a solution for a specified client / target audience

I feel like communication in schools is really lacking, and it’s a problem that needs to be
taken seriously. A lot of times, students don’t feel heard by their teachers or even by their
classmates, which can lead to frustration, stress, and a feeling of isolation. For example, when
teachers give out assignments without clearly explaining what’s expected, it leaves students
confused and afraid to ask questions. This can lead to anxiety, especially for students who
already struggle with confidence or social anxiety. In psychology, Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs explains that students need to feel safe, understood, and valued in order to reach their
full potential. When communication is poor, those emotional needs aren’t being met. I’ve
also noticed that sometimes when students are going through personal issues, like family
problems or mental health struggles, they don’t feel comfortable talking to school counsellors
because they’re afraid of being judged or not taken seriously. This lack of open and trusting
communication can lead to bigger problems like depression or acting out in class. Teachers
and staff might also not communicate well with each other, which means

important things about a student’s behaviour, learning difficulties, or emotional struggles

might be missed. I think schools really need to focus on building better communication skills
—creating safe spaces where students can talk openly, training teachers to listen better and
respond with empathy, and encouraging teamwork between staff. The Social Learning
Theory also shows how people learn by watching others, so if students see good
communication modelled by adults, they’re more likely to do the same. Simple changes like
regular check-ins, using clear and kind language, and really listening can make a big
difference. I believe that with better communication, schools would be healthier, more
supportive places where students can feel connected, heard, and ready to learn.

Strand – 4

Develop a detailed design brief which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.

Many students feel shy or scared to speak up in class, especially when they’re not confident
about their answers. In my primary research, I sent out a survey to classmates and found that
many of them worry about being judged or saying the wrong thing. They said they would feel
more comfortable participating if they had small prompts or group activities that felt casual
and not too serious. This showed me that students need low pressure ways to get involved in
class discussions.

In my secondary research, I explored existing tools like Flipgrid and jam board. Flipgrid lets
students record video responses, which is good for private reflection, but not very helpful for
live, face-to-face interaction. Jam board is great for teamwork and drawing ideas, but it
doesn’t guide students on what to say or how to start conversations. Both tools are helpful,
but they don’t solve the problem of helping students speak up more confidently in real time.

To solve this, I’m designing a set of “Design Cards” that give students creative and simple
prompts to use during lessons. These cards could be physical or digital and would include
different tasks like asking questions, sharing opinions, or drawing quick ideas with a partner.
The design will be colourful, easy to understand, and based on categories to help teachers use
them flexibly in class. This will encourage more interaction, help shy students feel included,
and make class discussions more active and fun.

Brainstorming on which design is the best –

Out of the three designs, design number 2 received harsh votes stating the colours are bland
and the title is small with a shocking 2/5, design number 1 received feedback that the format
itself showcased too much information and that it must be simplistic with-it looking bit
boring. It received a 3/5. Design number 3 received the most positive votes only stating that
the card looks a bit bland and plain. It got a 4/5. My personal favourite was design number 3
as well. Design number 3 will be used for further design and be the main design format, I will
use when making my card. It is the obvious choice as it is my personal favourite and the
people’s favourite.

Reference to design specification –

Design 3 was able to successfully follow and achieve the highest success criteria while the
other designs lacked. Design 2 failed in aesthetics with a 4 and design 1 achieved the lowered
end of the success criteria of aesthetics. Design number 3 is able to achieve all of my success
criteria and is also chosen through the survey,

Which design did I choose –

Why I chose the design –

The reason I chose this design is that it strikes simplistic but informative to my eyes without
rushing me for reading. It looks appealing with quite a simple format of title, image, and
instructions. The people liked the colours and the big display icon representing the concept of
the card. The people liked that the instructions were at the bottom and easy to read. That is
why I chose this design.

Strand 4 - Develop detailed planning/drawing/diagrams.

Basic drawing –
This was the basic design of the card before. The remarks I received from my 5 friends were
that its very plain and bland. I will be adding details into the background to transform it. I
will be most likely changing the colour of the background from plain white to a shade of
Gray such as light grey.

Brainstorming – In my detailed sketch I want to add small details into the background so that
the card doesn’t look plain and bland anymore. Small details like aesthetics. I will probably
change these small details based on the category of the card for example debate or hot seat.
The title will be changed from a green box to a line due to the colour being changed based on
the category type.

Detailed drawing –
This is the detailed drawing. Some key differences from the basic drawing are – the top green
box has been converted to a line meaning the colour of it can vary for different categories, I
added multiple lines at the bottom as a type of aesthetic. This aesthetic may vary based on the
category of the card but most cards will have this background. The colour of the background
was changed from pure white to light grey as it makes the card give off a dark vibe.

The card itself didn’t change much as I only focused on the background of the card due to the
feedback I received. The feedback explained that the format of the card itself was good but
the background was plain and bland.

Detailed Plan –

The plan for the future is to make multiple cards with different ideas and colours for
countless class activities. All these cards will be made with the chosen format design. The
detailed format will be used to make the cards. When the cards are made, I will be printing
them on a laser cutter cardboard made of perfect size for a normal card. The ideas will be
printed out on reused paper and be stuck on the cardboard. This will be done until 20-30
cards are made and design a box to keep them in.

The finished product will be given to teachers to try out as whenever they believe they need a
class activity. They can pick out a card at random and the class will have to perform the class
activity. This will lead to engagement and academics to take place. The cards will be of
multiple concepts such as debates, thinking activity, drawing, Collaboration activities.
These cards will help students in academics and increase engagement in the class. After the
creation of the solution, I will create a website where at the click of a button a random card is
selected and that class activity will be used. The plan for the product is to be used online or
physically, teachers all over the world can visit and still achieve the randomness of the
selection of the cards.

Requirements for the creation of the chosen solution will be following my design
specification achieving the highest in all my success criteria’s and making sure environment
sustainability is achieved because of my global context- globalization and sustainability. The
requirements for my design are to be able to thoroughly engage students in a class activity.

Strand 2 – Demonstrate technical skills

I applied my technical skills in various points of the creation of my website. I had to first
learn the skills I required to make the website in which I studied html, CSS and JavaScript
through platforms known as YouTube and google. These skills I developed help me learn
more about coding. To demonstrate the technical skills, I recently developed I decided it was
time to make the website.

I programmed the layout with the HTML, then added the CSS to make it pretty with the
colour, layout, and movement. JavaScript was probably the most necessary as it made the
cards roll, the confetti pop up, and allowed me to switch from rolling a card to seeing the card
index. These skills were necessary to make the website perfect and exactly how I envisioned
it.

To actually make the website I coded the entire script on notepad. After each script was
ready, I would save it and test it in my browser Brave. Every time I would find a flaw, I
would persistently watch a tutorial on what the issue was and then go back and redo the flaw.
If I was ever stuck or could not find a way to code in what I wanted I would research on how
to do it or ask Google Gemini for help.

In the end, the skills and tools utilized were key in making the website. Without them, I
would have a blank page of a website. Through trial and error, I was able to finally make the
website I envisioned in my mind for my design idea.

Tools Definition
Java Script - JavaScript is a programming
(scripting) language that enables dynamic
behaviour on web pages — making pages
interactive, updating content, responding to
user actions, running animations, etc.

CSS Coding - CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

is a stylesheet language used to describe
how HTML elements should be displayed
— controlling layout, colours, fonts,
spacing, and overall visual design.
HTML CODE - HTML (Hypertext Markup
Language) is the standard markup language
used to define the structure and content of a
web page — things like headings,
paragraphs, links, images.
Notepad - Notepad is a basic plain-text
editor included with Windows, used for
writing code in HTML, CSS, JavaScript,
etc. because it allows you to manually write,
save, and edit the code without extra
features.

Strand 3 – Follow the plan to make the solution

Step 1,2, and 3 are a continuation of each other and this is how I will go through them. I
researched class activities that the Hodder textbook from the IB curriculum used as they are
known to be interactive as a curriculum. I went through the oxford books as well to see class
activities that would engage a class in an activity. I then visited Figma a website to create the
designs.
|
These were the cards I ended up creating on the Figma website.

Step 4 and 5 were basic things I needed to research to understand how to make the website
and I went through with them with using tools such as YouTube tutorials, Web research and
Google Gemini.

Step 6,7,8,9, and 10 are all a continuation of where I make the code for the website.
Initially the website looked like this
With the roll animation not even working and it being very shallow with weak confetti.
I reviewed my code and visited google Gemini to help me understand where I went wrong
with my code. I watched another tutorial on animation and JavaScript to make my next try on
the website.

After reviewing my code and watching tutorials on java script to make the animations work
with a nice background. I added a slide on the left side where I could visit the card index to
view all the cards present but it did not work out well because I messed up the JavaScript so I
follow through with the plan on step 10.
This is the end product where everything functions perfectly and works according to the plan.

it contributes to my Gc of globalization and sustainability as I attain globalization through

this website where schools from various countries can use this game to choose the class
activity they will perform in class.

Strand 4 – Justify changes made to the plan

At first, my card design was based on the layout I made in Criterion B, but when I looked at it
again, I felt it was too plain and not very appealing for my target audience. That’s why I
decided to change it into something more interesting and clearer. The final design includes a
bold title, a fun emoji to represent the activity, and simple instructions. With colourful
headers and a clean layout, the cards look easy to read and more exciting for students to use.

One problem I faced was that I originally wanted to insert my Criterion B design directly into
the website, but I struggled with the coding and couldn’t make it work. Instead, I had to
rebuild the card design completely in HTML and CSS. This meant that my final design
looked different from my original plan. While the final version still works well, it is much
simpler than what I first imagined, and I couldn’t add all the details I had in my earlier mock-
up.

In the end, I think this change was actually successful. Even though I couldn’t use the exact
design from Criterion B, the cards still include all the important elements and are now easier
to use within the website. They look modern, neat, and simple, which makes them appealing
and practical for the classroom. I believe this final outcome works better for the project
because it balances appearance with functionality.

Appearance of cards –

In the beginning the card design layout look like this. I made the layout in my process of
criteria B. After reaching criteria C and looking back at it I felt it was too much and that the
design in the background didn’t do much for the overall design. I felt the layout was not the
best for the target audience.

Then I decided to rework on this layout as it did not appeal to my target audience.
I changed it to something more with a more blast of colour. This design appeals to the target
audience and performs very well for my success criteria’s.
The plan indicated that I would be inserting these cards into my website yet that was a
mistake as I struggled with inserting each of the cards into my code. This error caused a big
mistake in my website overall appeals. In the end I had to rely on coding to make the card.
The final design ended up being lines of code instead of the cards I generated in Figma.

In the end, I am not disappointed the card managed to hold its appeal and followed every
element I needed present in my card. Even though I was unable to use the card layout I made
in criteria B, this design followed every important element. The card itself looks sleek and
simple making it perfect for a classroom setting. This change ended up being best for my
target audience as it had bright colours, simplicity and a good design.

Another change I ended up making throughout the creation of my solution was the sound.
Originally there was to be rolling sound
Criteria D – Evaluating

Strand 1 – Design testing methods

To evaluate the website and whether it will perform well in a school setting, I decided the
best testing method was to telephone interview the target audience of students ranging from
grades 5th to 12th. I telephone interviewed a student studying at my 4 regarding their
evaluation of my website.

Interview with student who trailed the product -

Me – hello, I was wondering if you would like to trial the product and give me feedback on
the product.

Student – Sure, what aspects of the product should I be looking out for while testing your
product.

Me – You can try to imagine yourself in your class with your teacher applying this product in
class, what were your first impressions? To what extent would it engage students? Whiter the
product affects the class negatively or positively? These are the aspects you can look out for.

Student – Ok, I will do that.

One day later

Me – Did you enjoy the product? I hope you were able to find the product in a positive effect.
Student – Yes, the product is really enjoyable. The roll animation is fun and the aspect of
chance engages me as a student. Every class activity is interesting and I can definitely see it
being applied in a class setting such as my class.

Me – great! do you have any critical feedback for me to improve on?

Student – Yes, I noticed that the website did not have sound which made the rolling
animation feel empty.

Me – What else do you believe I should improve on?

Student – The background is simple and does not fit in when the roll animation happens. I
noticed that the variety of class activities only ranged 10. There may be an overlap of the
same class activity on different days due to this.

Me – Thank you for your suggestions! Do you believe that the product can engage a school
community?

Student – Yes, the product is interesting and can engage a whole classroom in a class activity.
It can definitely improve on some aspects but overall can increase the engagement a school
community displays.

Me – Thank you so much for your valuable feedback

the telephone interview went great and she mentioned key aspects that the product needs
improvement. Which was the background and the lacking presence of sound. The student
mentioned that the product is interesting and would sure engage a whole classroom in a
school community. In particular mentioning that the roll animation is fun and the aspect of
chance engages her and that the product could be envisioned being applied in a class setting.

The second design method I decided to use was to survey a group that fell in my target
audience. Surveys can help me get varying perspectives and test the product. I sent a survey
through email to 5 students from my 4 that fell in my target audience. This was to test
whether they would be engaged with the product.

Pie Charts –
Students get excited when class activities take place in class while 1 student disagrees and 1
student somewhat agrees. Students seem to like the class activities I made and agree that they
would get engaged in the class if the class activities were performed with one student
disagreeing. Students find the website appealing while one student disagrees and another
somewhat agrees. The students unanimously agree that the animations are great. The students
think that the class activities can definitely be viewed in a class setting with one student
somewhat agreeing.

Strand 3 – Explain how the solution could be improved

Strengths of the solution - The website turned out to be really engaging and fun to use. The
feature where we roll a card makes the anticipation tense, which makes the selection of the
card really exciting. The large blast of confetti makes it feel more alive and turns it into a
celebration. The website has a very friendly user interface and an easy-going user experience.
The card index is also organized neatly and is easy to view every class activity. It is visually
appealing and keeps students engaged. It definitely meets my goals of generating a change in
how classroom activities are and my take on making them more interactive and enjoyable.

Limitations of the Solution-

The website operates good but there are still some limitations to it. Right now, there aren’t
that many cards, so if it was used often in class, it might feel a bit repetitive. The website also
has no sound which make the rolling animation feel a little empty (reference to interview
done in strand 1). It also works best on a computer, but not as well on a phone or tablet, so
making it more responsive would make it easier for teachers to use on different devices.
Another thing that could make it better is letting teachers add their own cards or make the
index interactive by clicking on cards for more details.

Conclusion –

Overall, the website has performed well as it is able to perform every function I had planned.
It is able to make choosing activities fun, interactive with easy user interface and user
experience. There are limitations holding the website back with areas it could grow in like the
lack of activities, no sound and making it device compatible with better response in different
devices. The strengths and limitations balance each other and I think it’s at a great point
where everything works well and with can improve with some improvements
Strand 4: Explain the impact of the solution

The main focus for my target audience is teachers and students. Teaches can use the website
to generate a class activity to perform in class instead of spending extra time planning.
Students are the audience who perform the class activity and have fun looking at the fun
animations that happen when the class activity is being selected through the roll, instead of
being told what class activity to do directly. This adds a sense of anticipation.

The impact of this is substantial considering a classroom context as students are inclined to
give a better response when learning is presented as a fun game that is playful and interactive.
The rolling card mechanism showcases the probability aspect of the game, which lures in
who are curios and engaged. This engagement will lead to better results while performing the
activity itself. The website has an impact as it saves time for teachers from performing the
same lesson every day like a lecture instead the website eases them from the thinking needed
to do a class activity with a readymade website with a playful chance to it.

impact that my solution provided with the GC in mind is the fact that it is a digital website
and can be easily accessed through the internet. Accessibility is a major impact as teachers
can follow our page globally with our global context as globalisation and sustainability.
Sustainability in mind, the product is digital with no issues with sustainability. The product
fulfils less the GC and provides a real-life impact with its exceptional ability residing in
accessibility.
