Production at Springfield Armory shoulder arms began with the Model 1795 flintlock
musket. Springfield Armory was closed by the U.S. government in 1968 as a cost-cutting
measure.

LCol. Brophy, in his book The Krag Rifle, claims that the .22 Gallery
Practice Rifles were newly manufactured weapons. If so, adjust serial
numbers accordingly. Of the 841 .22’s manufactured, 500 were made in
1905 and 341 made in 1906. If Brophy is correct, then the highest possible
serial number that could appear on a U.S. Krag-Jorgensen is 478694.

Notes: Magazine modifications for the clip fed Parkerhurt device are in the

The entire 10 year production period is marked by numerous modifications
as to, sights, stock fittings. Many early models were recalled to SPAR for
such changes.
The Philippine Constabulary carbines were all (mostly) converted at Benicia
Arsenal, California.
The 1905 Gallery Practice rifles caliber .22 were in the serial number range
476000 to 4765000. 86 of these receivers are positively known to have been
destroyed.
Most of the 1898 converted carbines were modified to the 1899 Long Stock
model.

On 18 January 1943 Remington directed to divert from production 20,000
M1903A3 rifles for conversion to the U.S. Rifle M1903A4 (Sniper's). Rifles
#3407088-3427087 (from the first "block" of numbers) were diverted, and
the first "03-A3" converted was delivered in February 1943.
On 20 June 1943 an additional 8,365 M1909A4 rifles were ordered. "Block"
for these rifles and possible future orders was 4922001-5784000. After this
block had been used to 4997045, receiver marking was changed to "03-A4"
and a new series of numbers begun with Z4000000.
The second "block" of "03-A3" numbers was used only to about 4168800
before cancellation of contract ended "03-A3" production 28 February 1944.
In March 1944, with receiver Z4002290, production of the M1903A4 was
ended. Total production was 1,056,276 rifles, which included about 345,000
M1903 and M1903 (modified), about 711,276 M1903A3, and just 26,653
M1903A4 (short of the 28,365 ordered)

Winchester's serial-numbering system appears to have changed in January
1945. This seems to be about the time W.R.A. switched from 2.5 million
serial numbers to 1.6 million. These are often referred to as WIN-13 rifles.
The 2.5 million numbers stopped in the area of 2,535,XXX which places it
about 39,000 rifles from the end of production in June 1945. It is believed
that approximately 40,000 WIN-13 rifles were produced. In addition, rifles
in the 1.6 million serial number range have been observed ranging from
number 1,602,XXX through 1,639,XXX. All of this supports the January
1945 date for the serial number range change.

Production records of M1 Rifles immediately following WWII until the
outbreak of hostilities in Korea are less precise than for the WWII period.
The last rifle produced during WWII by Springfield Armory WWII lies in

Springfield M1 production was resumed in 1952 with serial number
4,200,000 leaving a gap of approximately 312,xxx serial numbers

ISSUE 7.65MM U.S. ARMY TRIALS
The listed serial number represent 770 pistols purchased by Bannerman &
Sons from the United States Government Arsenal at Springfield Armory in
1906. These are the only documented specimens of trial pistols issued by the
U.S. Army from 1901-1905. The original order from Deutsche Waffen und
Munitionsfabriken, Germany was for 1000 pistols. The 230 pistols whose
serial numbers are not shown were probably rendered useless in various
tests. It is quite possible however that a small number of these unrecorded
specimens came into private hands.

There is no definite marking employed by the United States Government
which will positively identify these pistols. Any stamped letters, numbers or
ordnance type flaming bombs found on the frame or receiver can not be
attributed to any United States government agency. If a M1900 American
Eagle, second issue pistol is suspected of being a trial specimen it will have
the following characteristics:
1. Serial number range 5800 to 7800.
2. The word Germany will not appear on the pistol.
