Satellite Orbit Calculations Guide

The document outlines an assignment focused on satellite communication, requiring calculations related to orbital mechanics. Tasks include determining the radius of circular orbits, semi-major axes, rates of regression, and various orbital parameters for satellites with specified eccentricities and periods. The assignment also involves analyzing specific satellite data, such as the Cosmos 1675 satellite's apogee and perigee heights.

ASSIGNMENT #01 SATELLITE COMMUNICATION

1. Calculate the radius of a circular orbit for which the period is 1-day.

2. Calculate the semi major axis for the satellite parameters given in Table GIVEN.

3. A satellite is orbiting in the equatorial plane with a period from perigee to perigee of 12 h. Given
that the eccentricity is 0.002, calculate the semi major axis. The ideal earth’s equatorial radius is
6378.1414 km.

4. A satellite is orbiting with an inclination of 10 degree with a period from perigee to perigee of 14
h. Given that the eccentricity is 0.004, calculate the semi major axis for perturbed earth. The
earth’s equatorial radius is 6378.1414 km.

5. Determine the rate of regression of the nodes and the rate of rotation of the line of apsides for
the satellite parameters specified

6. A satellite orbit has an eccentricity of 0.2 and a semi major axis of 10,000 km. Find the values of
(a) the latus rectum; (b) the minor axis; (c) the distance between foci.
7. The orbit for an earth-orbiting satellite orbit has an eccentricity of 0.15 and a semi major axis of
9000 km. Determine (a) its periodic time; (b) the apogee height; (c) the perigee height. Assume a
mean value of 6371 km for the earth’s radius.

8. The Cosmos 1675 satellite has an apogee height of 39,342 km and a perigee height of 613 km.
Determine the semi major axis and the eccentricity of its orbit. Assume a mean earth radius of
6371 km.
