Written Assignment Unit 5

As an employee of a corporation, I have the privilege of preparing and delivering a

persuasive speech to a group of foreign guests from Saudi Arabia. The objective of a

persuasive speech is to persuade the audience to accept the speaker's viewpoint

(MyOpenMath, n.d.). This is both an exciting and challenging opportunity. In this written

assignment for Unit 5, I will describe the steps involved in crafting a compelling speech on a

subject related to my company's hydroponic products industry. I will take language,

perception, and ethnocentrism into consideration to ensure cultural sensitivity.

1. Thesis Statement

The persuasive speech will focus on the advantages of hydroponic products and

technologies, emphasizing their ability to address food security and sustainability

issues. A persuasive speech thesis statement is a concise statement that clearly

outlines the main argument or position you plan to present in your speech (2024). It

will also highlight their relevance to the Saudi Arabian market. The objective is to

persuade our Saudi Arabian guests to consider incorporating hydroponic solutions into

their agricultural practices.

2. Key Points

a. Introduction to Hydroponic Products: The speech will provide an overview of

hydroponic products, elucidating the fundamental principles and benefits

associated with hydroponic farming. This will provide a brief overview of the

technology and its potential to revolutionize agricultural practices.

b. Addressing Food Security and Sustainability: The second point will focus on

the global obstacles related to food security and sustainability, with a

particular emphasis on the significance of hydroponic products in addressing

these challenges. This segment will highlight the effective utilization of

3

resources, minimized environmental footprint, and the opportunity for year-

round production that hydroponic systems provide.

c. Relevance to the Saudi Arabian Market: The third point will focus on the

significance of hydroponic products in the Saudi Arabian market. This will

involve highlighting the environmental conditions of the country, the scarcity

of water, and the potential of hydroponic technologies to address these

challenges while also contributing to the diversification of the economy.

3. Research Supporting the Thesis Statement

To persuade our Saudi Arabian guests, the speech will be supported by relevant

research and data demonstrating the benefits and potential of hydroponic products.

This will include citing scientific studies, industry reports, and examples of successful

hydroponic farming in similar environmental conditions.

a. Economic Benefits: The persuasive speech will demonstrate the financial

advantages of using hydroponic technologies, including higher output, reduced

water usage, and the potential for job creation in the agriculture industry. This

initiative will be customized to align with Saudi Arabia's economic goals and

diversification efforts.

b. Environmental Sustainability: The speech will highlight the environmental

sustainability of hydroponic farming, with a particular focus on water scarcity

and climate challenges in Saudi Arabia. It will examine the efficient use of

water, minimal pesticide application, and the potential for localized production

to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.

c. Technological Innovation: The speech will highlight the technological

breakthrough that hydroponic systems bring, demonstrating the potential for

collaboration and information sharing between our business and Saudi Arabian
4

stakeholders. This aligns with the nation's vision for technological

advancement and a knowledge-based economy.

4. Concluding Statements

In the final part of the address, I will summarize the main points and discuss the

potential for collaboration and shared advantages between our organization and the

Saudi Arabian market. This will involve inviting further dialogues and collaborations

to explore the integration of hydroponic solutions in the nation.

5. Cultural Sensitivities

When crafting a persuasive speech, it is essential to consider the cultural sensitivities

of our guests from Saudi Arabia. This includes being mindful of language, perception,

and ethnocentrism to ensure that the speech is both respectful and captivating.

a. Language: The speech will be delivered in English, reflecting the language's

extensive usage in global business settings. However, I will ensure that the

language used is clear, concise, and free of informal phrases or idiomatic

expressions that might not have a direct translation or connection with the

audience.

b. Perception: The speech will be tailored to demonstrate the compatibility of

hydroponic products with existing practices, rather than presenting them as a

replacement. This approach aims to acknowledge the cultural variations in

perceptions of agriculture and technology. This strategy is designed to align

with the beliefs and principles of visitors associated with conventional farming

techniques.

c. Ethnocentrism: In order to prevent ethnocentrism, the speech will refrain from

making any assumptions about the visitors' knowledge or participation in

agriculture. Instead, it will focus on delivering information in a manner that

5

fosters curiosity and open discussion, acknowledging the potential for mutual

learning and exchange of ideas.
