1a) You are provided with:

 4.0g of solid A, ethane -1, 2-dioic acid with formula (C00H)2, nH20
 Solution B, 0.1M sodium hydroxide solution
You are required to determine:

i)The solubility of solid A

ii)The relative formula mass of the acid (C00H)2. nH20 and the value of n.

Procedure 1
i) Using 10ml measuring cylinder, place 4cm3 of distilled water into a boiling tube containing solid A
ii) Insert the thermometer into the boiling tube and heat the mixture as you stir with the
thermometer until all the solid dissolves
iii) Allow the mixture to cool while stirring with the thermometer
iv) Record the temperature at which the crystals start to form in tube 1 below
v) Add a further 2cm3 of distilled water into the boiling tube
vi) Repeat procedure (ll) to (Vl) above and record the temperature at which the crystals start to
form to complete table 1 below
(Preserve the contents of the boiling tube for use in procedure ll)

(5mks)
a) On the grid below plot a graph of the solubility of solid A against temperature (3mks)

Graph 10cm by 10cm

b) From your graph determine; the solubility of solid A at 450c (1mk)

c) Saturated solution of salt A was cooled from 620c to 560c. Determine the mass of crystals
formed (1mk)

Procedure ll
i) Transfer all the contents of the boiling tube from procedure 1 into a clean 250ml volumetric
flask. Rinse the boiling tube and transfer the rinsing into the volumetric flask
ii) Add distilled water to the mark and label the resulting solution as solution c
iii) Fill the burette with solution c
iv) Pipette 25cm3 of solution B into a clean conical flask. Add 3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator
v) Titrate solution c against solution B to an accurate end point.
Repeat the titration two more times to obtain a consistent result. Complete table 2 below
Table 2

Volume of solution C used cm3

a) determine the average volume of solution C used (1mk)

b) Calculate:
i)The number of moles of solution B used (1mk)

3
ii)Given that solution C, is a dibasic acid, calculate the number of moles of solution C that reacted
(1mk)

iii) The concentration of solution C in moles per litre (1mk)

iv) Calculate the relative formula mass of acid (C00H)2. nH20. Hence determine the value of n. (H =
1, 0 = 16, C = 12) (2mks)

2. You are provided with solid P, use it to answer questions that follow
Place all soli P provided into a clean boiling tube then add 10cm3 of distilled water. Shake the
contents thoroughly then filter. Retail both filtrate and residue. Divide the filtrate into four equal
portions
a) To the first portion, add sodium hydroxide dropwise until in excess
