SHAILESH SIR’S NOTES

Chapter 2: Human Reproduction

(NCERT Class 12 – Detailed Notes)

1. General Reproductive Events in Humans

• Humans reproduce sexually and are viviparous (give birth to young ones, not eggs).
• Major events:
1. Gametogenesis → Gamete (sperm/ovum) formation.
2. Insemination → Transfer of sperm into female tract.
3. Fertilisation → Fusion of gametes, formation of zygote.
4. Blastocyst formation → Cleavage & early embryonic development.
5. Implantation → Blastocyst attaches to uterine wall.
6. Gestation → Embryo development (9 months).
7. Parturition → Childbirth.
• Puberty: When reproductive organs mature.
• Menopause (females ~50 yrs): Oogenesis stops. Spermatogenesis continues in old
men.

2. Male Reproductive System

• Location: Pelvis region.

• Parts: Testes, ducts, glands, penis.

(i) Testes

• Paired, oval, inside scrotum (2–2.5°C cooler → required for spermatogenesis).

• Each testis → ~250 testicular lobules.
• Each lobule → 1–3 seminiferous tubules (site of sperm production).

Cells inside seminiferous tubule:

1. Male germ cells (spermatogonia): Produce sperms via meiosis.

2. Sertoli cells: Provide nutrition + support.

Interstitial spaces (outside tubules):

• Contain Leydig (interstitial) cells → secrete androgens (testosterone).

• Also have blood vessels.

(ii) Ducts

• Rete testis → Vasa efferentia → Epididymis → Vas deferens.

• Vas deferens loops over bladder, joins seminal vesicle → forms ejaculatory duct →
opens into urethra.

(iii) Glands

• Seminal vesicles, Prostate, Bulbourethral glands.

• Secretions + sperm = semen.
o Rich in fructose, calcium, enzymes.
o Bulbourethral glands → lubrication.

(iv) External genitalia

• Penis (erectile tissue → erection for insemination).

• Glans penis (tip) covered by foreskin.

Diagram to draw:

• Male reproductive system (longitudinal view).

• Seminiferous tubule (show Sertoli, Leydig, spermatogonia).
• Sperm structure.

3. Female Reproductive System

• Location: Pelvic cavity.

• Parts: Ovaries, ducts (oviduct, uterus, vagina), external genitalia, mammary glands.

(i) Ovaries

• Primary sex organ. Size 2–4 cm.

• Functions:
o Produce ovum.
Secrete estrogen, progesterone.
o
• Stroma:
o Outer cortex.
o Inner medulla.

(ii) Ducts

1. Oviduct (Fallopian tube) – 10–12 cm.

o Infundibulum → funnel-shaped, fimbriae to collect ovum.
o Ampulla → wider part (site of fertilisation).
o Isthmus → narrow, joins uterus.
2. Uterus (womb) – pear-shaped, opens into vagina via cervix.
o Wall layers: Perimetrium, Myometrium, Endometrium.
3. Vagina – elastic tube, forms birth canal with cervix.

(iii) External genitalia

• Mons pubis, Labia majora, Labia minora, Hymen, Clitoris.

• Hymen not a reliable indicator of virginity.

(iv) Mammary glands

• 15–20 lobes → alveoli → ducts → ampulla → lactiferous duct → nipple.

• Secrete milk post-childbirth.

Diagram to draw:

• Female reproductive system (lateral view).

• Ovary with follicles.
• Graafian follicle.

4. Gametogenesis
(i) Spermatogenesis

• Begins at puberty.
• Steps:
1. Spermatogonia (2n) → mitosis → Primary spermatocyte.
2. Primary spermatocyte (2n) → Meiosis I → 2 Secondary spermatocytes (n).
3. Secondary spermatocytes → Meiosis II → 4 Spermatids (n).
4. Spermatids → Spermiogenesis → Spermatozoa.
5. Released into lumen → Spermiation.

Hormonal control:

• GnRH → stimulates LH & FSH.

• LH → Leydig cells → Androgens.
• FSH → Sertoli cells → factors aiding spermiogenesis.

Sperm structure:

• Head: Nucleus + Acrosome (enzymes).

• Middle piece: Mitochondria → energy.
• Tail: Motility.

(ii) Oogenesis

• Starts in foetus.
• Steps:
1. Millions of oogonia → primary oocytes (prophase I arrest).
2. Surrounded by granulosa → Primary follicle.
3. Develops into Secondary follicle (theca + more layers).
4. Becomes Tertiary follicle (fluid-filled antrum).
▪ Meiosis I completed → Secondary oocyte + 1st polar body.
5. Graafian follicle forms → ovulation releases secondary oocyte (arrested in
metaphase II).

5. Menstrual Cycle

• ~28 days cycle.

• Menarche: First menstruation.
• Menopause: End of cycles (~50 yrs).

Phases:

1. Menstrual phase (1–5 day): Shedding of endometrium if no fertilisation.

2. Follicular phase (6–14 day): Follicle growth, estrogen secretion, endometrium
regeneration.
3. Ovulation (Day 14): LH surge → Graafian follicle rupture → secondary oocyte release.
4. Luteal phase (15–28 day): Corpus luteum forms → progesterone → maintains
endometrium.
o If fertilisation fails → corpus luteum degenerates → new cycle starts.
6. Fertilisation & Implantation

• Fertilisation site: Ampulla of fallopian tube.

• Acrosome enzymes → help sperm enter ovum.
• Zona pellucida → prevents polyspermy.
• Entry of sperm triggers:
o Completion of Meiosis II.
o Formation of diploid zygote.

Development:

• Zygote → Cleavage → Blastomeres → Morula (8–16 cells) → Blastocyst.

• Blastocyst:
o Outer Trophoblast (forms placenta).
o Inner cell mass (embryo).
• Implantation in endometrium → pregnancy.

7. Pregnancy & Embryonic Development

• Gestation: 9 months.
• Placenta:
o Formed from chorionic villi + uterine tissue.
o Functions → nutrient/O₂ supply, CO₂/waste removal, endocrine (hCG, hPL,
Estrogen, Progesterone, Relaxin).
• Umbilical cord connects foetus to placenta.

Foetal Development:

• 1 month → Heart.
• 2 months → Limbs & digits.
• 3 months → Organs formed.
• 5 months → Movements, hair.
• 6 months → Eyelids open, eyelashes.
• 9 months → Fully developed.
8. Parturition & Lactation

• Parturition (childbirth):
o Trigger: Foetus & placenta release signals → mild uterine contractions (foetal
ejection reflex).
o → Oxytocin release → stronger contractions → childbirth.
• Lactation:
o Mammary glands produce milk.
o Colostrum: First milk → antibodies → newborn immunity.

Mnemonics

1. Male ducts (path of sperm):

RVEV = Rete testis → Vasa efferentia → Epididymis → Vas deferens.
2. Uterine wall layers:
PME = Perimetrium → Myometrium → Endometrium.
3. Fallopian tube parts:
IAI = Infundibulum → Ampulla → Isthmus.
4. Sperm parts:
HNMT = Head → Neck → Middle piece → Tail.
5. Pregnancy hormones (unique):
HHR = hCG, hPL, Relaxin.
6. Zygote → Implantation:
ZMBI = Zygote → Morula → Blastocyst → Implantation.
