GHANA TEACHER LICENSURE EXAMINATION

(GTLE)

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE PAPER: NUMERACY

ONLINE LESSON: EIGHT
Tutor: Alasca- 0540770189
TOPIC: Measurement and Geometry: Measurement units,
Measurement of time, money, length, capacity and mass

7/10/2025 ALASCA-0540770189 1
Competencies
1. Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of
the basic standard units of measurement (or
referents such as feet, inches, metres,
kilometres, kilogrammes, etc.)
2. Solve problems involving measurement of
time, money, length, capacity and mass.

Measurement Units
• In mathematics, length is referred to as the distance
between two points or the measure of a distance
between two endpoints of an object.
• Measurement is the process of finding a number
that shows the amount of something.
• Measurement is a system to measure the height,
weight, capacity or even amount of certain objects.
• We can measure how long things are or how tall or
how far two things are. For example: The height of
Oliver is 100 inches and the height of the giraffe is
150 inches.

Measurement Of Length
• The amount of something that is measured from one end
to the other along the longest side is called its length
• Length of a given object describes how long things are or
the distance between two points.
• When we measure the size of an object horizontally, it is
known as length, whereas, when we measure the size of an
object vertically, it’s known as the height of an object.
• Length is measured in
❖ centimeters,
❖ meters,
❖ kilometers,
❖ feet, and
❖ miles

Length Conversion
• The method of converting the measures of length
from one unit to another is called length
conversion.
• In the metric system, units for length are
kilometres (km), metres (m), centimetres (cm),
and so on.
• The conversion of these units from one unit to
another is referred to as the conversion of
units for length.
• Thus, we can convert km to m, m to cm, cm to
mm and vice versa.

Length Conversion Questions
1. The height of one floor of a building is 304 cm. If the
building has 7 floors, what is the height of building in
meters?
2. Which is more 2985 mm or 298 cm?
3. Rachel has a rope of length 40 m. She gave 12 m 53
cm to Sam, 18 m 35 cm to Ron and 9 m 7 cm to Jack.
What length of rope is still left with Rachel?
4. Jane has 63 m of ribbon. If she cuts 56 m 21 cm
ribbon from it, what length of ribbon will be left?
5. Victor wants to make a book tower of height 48 cm. If
the thickness of each book is 12 mm, how many
books will he need to make the desired height?

Measurement Of Mass and Weight
• Mass by definition refers to the amount of matter in a
particular object.
• Mass measures how much matter is in an object.
• We usually measure this by finding out what the object
weighs.
• Mass and weight are slightly different but we often use
weight terms when we are talking about day to day mass
measurements.
• Common measurements are
❖ grams (g),
❖ kilograms (kg) and
❖ tonnes (t).
• The SI Unit of mass is the kilogram (kg)

Mass and Weight Questions
1. A worker transferred 50 bags of rice weighing 38 kg 500 g each
into a truck. The weight of empty truck is 1480 kg. What will be
the weight of the truck with the bags?
2. Niko has a bag of pulses which weighs 25 kg. While putting them
in the shelf, he tore the bag and hence 1850 g of pulses fell on the
floor. What quantity of pulses is still there in the bag?
3. A box of frozen vegetables weighing 144 kg 780 g was delivered at
a grocery shop. If there were 15 packets of equal weight inside the
box, what was the weight of each bag?
4. In a grocery shop, there was 2510 kg 350 g of wheat in the
morning. During the day, 890 kg 600 g of wheat was sold out. How
much of wheat was left in the shop in the evening?

Measurement Of Capacity
• Capacity refers to the amount a container can hold and is usually associated with liquid. Common capacity
measurements are millilitres and litres.

• Units of capacity and volume conversion chart are discussed here in metric conversion of capacity and volume and
also in customary units of capacity and volume.

• In math when we use capacity and volume, we normally use liter to represent as the standard unit, and the other
standard units are in the units in capacity and volume conversion chart.

• 1 milliliter = 0.001 liter

1 centiliter = 0.01 liter
1 deciliter = 0.1 liter
1 kiloliter = 1000 liters
• 1 gallon = 4 quarts
1 gallon = 128 ounces
1 quart = 2 pints
1 pint = 2 cups
1 cup = 8 ounces

Measurement Of Capacity Questions
1. Abi has to take 2 spoons of multivitamin syrup
each day. If the capacity of the spoon is 15 ml,
what quantity of syrup will be taken by him in a
week?
2. A tin contains 10 l 150 ml, a second tin contains
5 l 750 ml and a third tin contains 3 l 875 ml of
ground nut oil. What is the total quantity of oil?
3. Convert 55 ml into l
4. Convert 6 hl into l.

Measurement Of Time
• A day has 24 hours. We use A.M. to tell the time
running from midnight to noon and P.M. for the
time running from noon to midnight.
• We do not write A.M. or P.M. at 12 o’clock in the
afternoon and 12 o’clock at midnight. 12 o’clock
at noon is written as 12 noon and 12 o’clock at
midnight is written as 12 midnight.
• In order to calculate answers to questions
involving time, you must know which units are
being used.
• In questions referring to a week, please note that
it is a school week of 5 days.

Measurement Of Time
Conversion
• 1 day = 24 hours
• 1 hour = 60 minutes
• 1 minute = 60 seconds
• 1 hour = 3600 seconds

Measurement Of Time Questions
1. What time will it be 4 hours after 7:45 P.M
2. Write the number of hours that pass between 4:00 P.M.
and 8:00 P.M.
3. The long hand of a clock is at 11 and the short hand is
between 8 and 9. It's morning. The time is
4. A junior school is putting on entertainment. If each of the
4 classes is allowed 25 minutes and the entertainment
starts at 2.15pm, when is it expected to finish?

hear a group of children reading. If there are 10 children
in the class, can she give them all 10 minutes each?
