Chapter 4

Frank
It had been a while since my wife left me. We couldn’t get kids, and I
didn’t make much of an income as she might have liked. I still see her
with her new husband around from time to time. They don’t live that far.
I don’t see my family much, I live in a different country, and rarely get
to visit them back home. It was a miserable life, I had nothing going on.
Id finish work at 5 get back home and sleep or watch movies till the next
day. I couldn’t contemplate going out to do something since I was still
not over my wife leaving me.
I thought she was the one, and couldn’t imagine my life without her. I
still remember our proposal. It was on new year’s and I took her on a
date to a stargazing site. Thinking about it made my heart ache. It was
all over now, all the promises I made her and the ones she made me.
I didn’t want to die alone. I was hoping id find someone, but with my
current lifestyle, no one would want me.
Ray
It was finally the weekend. I woke up really early and snuck out to the
garden. We lived close to a little forest kinda place, and had built a
hiding place id run to sometimes. I went there and had some morning
tea. I usually keep my things there, and most importantly my savings.
They don’t add up to much but I do some things on the side sometimes
for a few extra bucks. I’m going to use them today and invite Everly to a
meal. I’ve always wanted to wear my formal shirt. It was a button shirt
with long sleeves. It had a checkered red and brown pattern, almost like
a lumberjack’s. I wore some jeans pants and put on some cologne.
I was so nervous; my hands were shaking and I had a sinking feeling in
my chest. I sat a little and decided to change into more normal looking
clothes. I was just giving her the cat back after all. I instead put on a
peachy T-shirt, and kept the jeans pants. “I better not overdo it” I
thought to myself. It was an hour to our meeting time, and I used an old
pet carrier that was laying around. My aunt used to have a cat as well. I
cleaned it the night before. I called out the little kitten and put her in the
carrier and headed out.
It wasn’t a very long walk to the town square. We had decided to meet
in one of the cafes nearby. I got to the café early and took a sit on the
first table I saw. It was this old themed café, with hardwood floor,
wooden tables and chairs and some old board games (chess, checkers...
et cetera). It was a prime spot for students who wanted some quiet to
study, and overall it was very quiet. It was owned by a lady nicknamed
Caty. No one really knew her actual name nor did they care to know. It
was the name everyone knew her by. She was a middle-aged woman,
but it didn’t really show. She looked rather young.
I waited for around thirty minutes before Everly showed up. She was
wearing a tall skirt with a long-sleeved top. It was very plain yet it
looked beautiful on her. I tried not to stare much but she probably
noticed. she looked rather shy at first, but when I got the cat out her
facial expression changed drastically. She was suddenly holding the cat
next to me and she looked overjoyed. She said that she had missed her a
lot, and her reaction did nothing but emphasize that.
She put the cat into the holder and sat down in front of me. We both
ordered a hot coffee and stared at each other awkwardly. We both stayed
quiet for some time and didn’t say a word. She later got a call from her
mother and had to leave. It was very anti-climactic but I couldn’t really
do anything about it.
I felt a little off, so I decided to walk back home. As I was walking, the
nearby forest caught my attention. I felt an attraction towards it, so I
decided on a whim to go walk there. It was nice to take a breath of fresh
air for once in a while. I got home late at night, the lights were off and
the front door was unlocked. I walked into the living room and saw my
aunt’s boyfriend watching tv on the couch. She was no where to be seen
though. I didn’t want to ask him as I hated talking to him. So, I went
upstairs and went to bed.
I woke up to a very bright light, I thought it was the morning, I glanced
out the window, but the moon was still in the sky. I then contemplated
the shining lights; it was a blinking red and blue light. I could hear
chattering downstairs. My heart sank immediately. I went downstairs
and saw a few police officers. My aunt was murdered. Suddenly, all
sound faded away. It was all quiet.
