2025-2026 Semester I. CML1001. Tutorial 5.

Due Date: 16th Oct 2025

1. Moment of inertia for rigid rotator is defined as I =m1 l 21 +m2 l 22. Show it is equivalent to writing
1 1 1
I =μ l , where l=l 1 +l 2 and μ the reduced mass given by μ = m + m
2
1 2
imϕ
2. Normalize T ( ϕ )=A m e
3. Show that Y −1 ^
1 (θ , ϕ) is not an eigenfunction of L x.
4. Show that ^L2 and ^L z commute.
5. A measurement yields √ 2ℏ for the magnitude of a particle's orbital angular momentum. If L x is
now measured, what are the possible outcomes?
6. Verify the orthogonality of the p x , p y ,∧ p z functions.
7. Express the real d functions given in the book as linear combinations of the complex functions
d 2 , d 1 ... , d−2.
8. Show that [ ^L x , ^L y ]=iℏ L^ z (Hint: Use the operator in Cartesian coordinates).
9. Show that [ ^L x , y ]=iℏz
10. Show by direct operation that the functions sin θ exp iϕ , sin θ exp(−iϕ),and cos θ are
eigenfunctions of ^L z. What are the eigenvalues?
11. Use the operator for ^L2 in polar coordinates to show that the function (3 cos 2 θ−1) is an
eigenfunction of this operator. What is the eigenvalue? What is the quantum number l for this
function?
12. Show that Y −1 1
1 (θ , ϕ)is normalized and it is orthogonal to Y 2 ( θ , ϕ ).
13. Calculate the moment of inertia of H35Cl, H37Cl, and D35Cl all of which have an equilibrium bond
length of 1.275 Å . Calculate the positions of the first three rotational transitions for H35Cl and
D35Cl.
14. In the far infrared spectrum of H79Br, there is a series of lines separated by 16.72 cm−1. Calculate
the values of the moment of inertia and the internuclear separation in H79Br.
15. The J=0→ J=1 line in the microwave absorption spectrum of 12C16O and of 13C16O was found
to be at 3.84235 cm−1 and 3.67337 cm−1 . Calculate (a) the bond length of 12C16O, (b) the relative
atomic mass of 13C.
16. Using explicit expressions for Y ml ( θ , ϕ ), show that
2 2 2
|Y 11 ( θ , ϕ )| +|Y 01 ( θ , ϕ )| +|Y −1
1 ( θ , ϕ )|
= constant
17. The particle on a ring is a useful model for the motion of electrons
around the porphyrin ring (2), the conjugated macrocycle that forms
the structural basis of the haem (heme) group and the chlorophylls.
The group may be modelled as a circular ring of radius 440 pm, with
22 electrons in the conjugated system moving along its perimeter. In
the ground state of the molecule each state is occupied by two
electrons. (a) Calculate the energy and angular momentum of an
electron in the highest occupied level. (b) Calculate the frequency of
radiation that can induce a transition between the highest occupied
and lowest unoccupied levels.
