3.5 Subtraction of Integers
Subtraction is the opposite of addition.
Example 1
From the point zero, move 10 steps to the right and then 4 steps to the left. The final stop is at
positive 6.

Therefore 10 – 4 = 6.
Example 2
From the point zero, move 5 steps to the right and 8 step to the left. The final stop is at negative

Therefore 5 – 8 = – 3 .
Note:
In subtraction, if the negative number is greater than the positive number the normal
addition should be done but the answer will taken a negative sign. i.e take the small number
away from the big number, but the answer will have a negative sign since the bigger number has
a negative sign.
