Understanding Numeric Patterns

The document discusses numerical patterns, specifically arithmetic and geometric sequences, along with special successions like triangular, square, and cubic numbers. It provides examples of each type of sequence and includes activities for identifying and completing number patterns. The document aims to enhance understanding of how numbers can follow specific rules and patterns.

Numerical Pattern

We call a numerical pattern, a list of numbers that

they follow a certain sequence or pattern.

Example: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, ... Starts with 1 and jumps 3 each time.

Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Doubles each time.

Known patterns of numbers

Sometimes numbers form interesting patterns. Here we show the most common ones and how they
foreman.
Arithmetic sequences
An arithmetic sequence is built by adding a fixed value each time.
Examples:
1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, ...
This sequence has a difference of 3 between each two consecutive numbers.
The pattern continues by adding 3 to the last number each time.

Geometric sequences
A geometric sequence is constructed by multiplying a fixed value each time.
Examples:

2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, ...

This sequence has a factor of 2 between every two consecutive numbers.

The pattern continues by multiplying the last number by 2 each time.

3, 9, 27, 81, 243, 729, 2187, ...

This sequence has a factor of 3 between every two consecutive numbers.

The pattern continues by multiplying the last number by 3 each time.

Special successions
Triangular numbers

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, ...

This sequence is generated with a pattern of points that forms a triangle.
By adding another row of dots and counting the total, the following number of the sequence is found.

Square numbers
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, ...
The following number is obtained by raising its position to the square.
The second number is 2 squared (2)2o 2×2)
The seventh number is 7 squared (72o 7×7) etc.

Cubic numbers
1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, ...
The following number is calculated by raising its position to the cube.
The second number is 2 cubed (23(2×2×2)
The seventh number is 7 cubed (73o 7×7×7) etc.

Activity
I-) Complete the four numbers that continue in these sequences:
8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
b-) 15, 18, 21, _____, _____,_____,_____
c-) 40, 42, 44, _____, _____,_____,_____
30, 33, 36, ____, ____, ____, ____
e-) 32, 30, 28, _____, _____,_____,_____
II-) What is the missing mailbox number?

III-) Using number lines:

1-) Jump counting by twos. Use a colored pencil. Write the missing numbers.

2 , _____, _____, _____, _____, _____, _____, _____, _____

2-) Count in threes. Use a colored pencil. Write the missing numbers.

3 , _____, _____, _____, _____, _____

IV-) Find the pattern. Complete the table.

V-) Draw a diagonal on the 100 table and say what pattern you find.
What characteristic do the numbers in this pattern have?
