Condenser Design Assignment Problems

The document outlines three assignment problems related to the design of heat exchangers for condensing various vapors. It includes specific details such as flow rates, temperatures, pressures, and properties of the fluids involved. Each problem requires calculations for heat transfer and equipment design based on provided data and conditions.

1. 9525 kg/hr of HC vapour from diffusion column at 54 C at 1.7atm Pressure are to be condensed
completely to saturated liquid at 54o C. Condensate is to be further cooled to 38o C for storage
cooling will be effected by water that enters 27o C and leaves at 38o C. [delta]P shellside of 14kN/m2
& permissible for vapour & 75 kN/m2 for H2 O . min fouling factor 5x10-4 m2 /W K should be
provided. Molecular weight of hc vapour is 72, latent heat of HC = 335 KJ/kg. consider ID of
15.75 mm; OD = 19 mm, L=5m, Triangular pitch arrangement with pitch = 25.4 mm. properties
are:
Property HC liq Hc vap Water at 32.5oC
Density (kg/m3) 996.25-1.25T - 995
K (W/mk) 0.182-15.5*10^-5T - 0.62

2. A flowrate of 0.1 kmol/s of pure acetone vapour is to be condensed without any condensate
subcooling. The condensation is to take place in a shell side of the horizontal shell and tube HX
against cooling H2 O flowing in 2 passes on the tube side. The operating [Pressure] of the
condenser is 1.52 bar. At this P, acetone condenses at 67o C. H2 O inlet and outlet [T] are 25o C
and 35 o C . condenser can be assumed to be steel with tubes with 20mm OD & 2mm wall
thickness, Tube Pitch(Pt ) = 1.25OD and square arrangement. Ratio of ltube /ds = 5. Assume fouling
coefficient to be 11,000 w/m2 K for shell & tube side fluids flowable tube side u=2m/s.
