(2Marks)

Q4 Read the passages (i), (ii) & (iii) carefully and answer the questions that follow. (4+4+4=12marks)

1. Plants synthesize carbohydrates through the process of photosynthesis. The carbohydrates are made of
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. These are used to synthesize other components of food such as proteins and fats.
But proteins are nitrogenous substances which contain nitrogen. Nitrogen is present in abundance in gaseous
form in the air.
However, plants cannot absorb nitrogen in this form. Soil has certain bacteria that convert gaseous nitrogen into
a usable form and release it into the soil. These are absorbed by the plants along with water. Also, you might
have seen farmers adding fertilizers rich in nitrogen to the soil. In this way the plants fulfil their requirements of
nitrogen along with the other constituents. (1x4=4 marks)
i) Plants can prepare food by capturing sunlight with the help of chlorophyll. This process is known as
(a) Metabolism (b) Catabolism (c) Photosynthesis (d) Digestion

ii) Carbohydrates are made up of

(a) Carbon (b) Hydrogen (c) Oxygen (d) All of the above

iii) Which organism convert gaseous nitrogen into a usable form.

(a) earthworm (b) cattle (c)Amoeba (d) bacteria

iv. ………….. gas is present in abundance in the air.

(a) Oxygen. (b) Carbon dioxide (c) Nitrogen (d) Argon

2. Animals such as elephants, lions, cows, goats, frogs, snakes, birds, have lungs in their chest cavities like the
human beings. Cockroach: A cockroach has small openings on the sides of its body. Other insects also have
similar openings. These openings are called spiracles. Insects have a network of air tubes called tracheae for gas
exchange. Oxygen rich air rushes through spiracles into the tracheal tubes, diffuses into the body tissue, and
reaches every cell of the body.
Similarly, carbon dioxide from the cells goes into the tracheal tubes and moves out through spiracles. These air
tubes or tracheae are found only in insects and not in any other group of animals. The skin of an earthworm feels
moist and slimy on touching. Gases can easily pass through them. Though frogs have a pair of lungs like human
beings, they can also breathe through their skin, which is moist and slippery. (1x4=4 marks)

i) Which of the following animal have lungs like human beings?

(a) Cows (b) Goat (c) Snakes (d) All of the above

ii) The Tracheae is found only in the____________ and no other group of animals.

iii. ____________ organism can breathe through their skin.
(a) Snake (b) Reptiles (c) Birds (d) Frog

iv. How does the skin of earthworms feel on touching? __________________

3. Some things feel hot when touched while others feel cold. So, our sense of touch tells us whether a thing is hot
or cold. But does it always give us accurate results? A reliable measure of the hotness of an object is its
temperature. Temperature is measured by a device called a thermometer. The thermometer used to measure
human body temperature is known as clinical thermometer. A clinical thermometer is made up of a long and
narrow glass tube. It has a distinctive feature called a kink just above the mercury bulb. This kink prevents
immediate backflow of the mercury from the tube to the bulb, thus allowing us to read the temperature
conveniently. (1x4=4 marks)
(i) The normal temperature of the human body is _________________

(ii) Heat always flows from –

(a) From a colder object to a hotter object. (b) From a hotter object to a colder object.
