Fluid Mechanics Practice Problems

The document contains practice problems related to fluid mechanics, including calculations for specific weight, density, and specific gravity of a fluid, as well as flow velocity and pressure in different scenarios. It also involves determining the percentage composition of a gas mixture. Each problem requires specific formulas and conversions to solve for the required values.

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

1. A fluid of mass 72 slugs has a volume of 1.2 ft^3

Determine:
a. Specific Weight in N/m^3
b. Density in kg/m^3
c. Specific Gravity

2. A pipe with a circular cross section has a diameter of 12 cm

and it is conveying a substance called glycerin (sg = 1.26).
The volume of fluid passing in a certain section is 7.5 gallons
in 3 minutes.

Determine:

A. Velocity of flow in (ft/s)

B. Density in (g/cm^3)
C. If the pipe’s cross section is to be replaced with a
pentagonal section with a side length of 5 cm with the
same flow rate. What is the velocity of flow in (m/s)

3. A sample of mercury (sg = 13.6) has a depth of 1.3 m.

Determine the absolute pressure at the bottom in kPa.

Gage Pressure = (Gamma Fluid)*(Depth)

4. A mixture of gas contains argon , helium and oxygen gas.

The gas mixture has a total pressure of 900 mmHg. The
Argon gas is 1.4 times the amount of helium and the oxygen
gas is thrice the amount of helium. Determine the
percentage composition of the three gas chemicals in the
mixture
