3D Shapes: Key Concepts and Exercises

Chapter 9 covers important concepts related to 3D shapes, including definitions of cubes, cuboids, cylinders, and cones, along with their characteristics such as faces, edges, and corners. It also explains the concept of nets for visualizing 3D shapes in 2D form and includes exercises for identifying shapes and matching objects. The chapter emphasizes the differences between 2D and 3D sketches.

Chapter 9: Boxes and Sketches

Important Concepts:

1. 3D Shapes (Solid Shapes): Shapes that have length, breadth, and height are called 3-dimensional shapes
(e.g., cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone).
2. Face: A flat surface of a solid shape.
3. Edge: The line where two faces meet.
4. Corner (Vertex): A point where edges meet.
5. Cube: All sides are equal.
Faces = 6, Edges = 12, Corners = 8
6. Cuboid: Opposite faces are equal (like a box).
Faces = 6, Edges = 12, Corners = 8
7. Cylinder: 2 flat faces (top & bottom), 1 curved face, no corners
8. Cone: 1 flat face, 1 curved face, 1 corner (tip)
9. Net of a Box: A 2D shape that can be folded into a 3D box.
Helps to visualize how a solid is made.
10. Sketches:

 2D sketch = flat drawing (top view, front view, side view)

 3D sketch = shows shape with depth

Q1. Fill in the blanks:

a) A cube has ___ faces, ___ edges, and ___ corners.

b) A cuboid has ___ faces, ___ edges, and ___ corners.
c) A cylinder has ___ flat faces and ___ curved face.
d) A cone has ___ flat face and ___ corner.

✅ Answer:
a) 6, 12, 8
b) 6, 12, 8
c) 2, 1
d) 1, 1

Q2. Identify the shape:

a) A solid with 6 equal square faces → Cube

b) A box with different length, width, height → Cuboid
c) A solid with circular top and bottom and curved side → Cylinder
d) A solid with one curved surface, one flat base, and one point → Con

Q3. Match the objects with their shapes:

Object Shape
Dice Cube
Matchbox Cuboid
Cold drink can Cylinder
Ice cream cone Cone

Q4. How many small cubes are needed to make a cube of size 3 × 3 × 3?
Number of small cubes = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubes

Q5. Draw the net of a cube using 6 equal squares.
