Project Methodology: LAN Setup and Wi-Fi Installation

1.0 Introduction
This document outlines the structured methodology for the successful
delivery of a robust and secure Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless (Wi-
Fi) installation. Our approach is phased to ensure meticulous planning,
precise execution, and thorough validation, minimizing disruption and
ensuring the final solution meets all functional and performance
requirements.

2.0 Phase 1: Discovery and Planning

2.1 Requirements Workshop: Conduct meetings with key stakeholders to
gather information on user count, devices, applications, coverage areas,
security concerns, and growth plans.

 2.2 Site Survey: Perform a physical walk-through to identify structural

obstacles, existing infrastructure, and optimal equipment placement. A
predictive and/or active Wi-Fi survey will be conducted to model coverage
and determine exact Access Point (AP) quantity and locations.

 2.4 Bill of Materials (BOM): Finalize and present a detailed list of all
required hardware (switches, APs, routers, cables) for client approval.

3.0 Phase 2: Pre-Staging & Preparation

Objective: To minimize on-site disruption by pre-configuring equipment in a
controlled environment.

 3.1 Hardware Configuration: Unbox, rack, and pre-configure core network

equipment (router, switches, APs) off-site according to the approved design.
This includes:
o Setting up SSIDs, and security policies.
o Applying firmware updates.
o Labeling all equipment and ports.

4.0 Phase 3: Implementation & Installation

Objective: To physically install and connect all network components
according to the design.

 4.1 Physical Installation:

o Run and terminate structured UTP cabling (Cat6) from the main comms room
to designated wall ports and AP locations.
o Mount APs in pre-determined locations for optimal coverage.
o Install and rack pre-configured switches, routers, and patch panels.
o Connect all components with appropriate patch cables, ensuring neat cable
management.
 4.2 Logical Configuration:
o Bring pre-staged equipment online.
o Perform final on-site configuration checks and adjustments.
o Establish internet connectivity and core routing.

5.0 Phase 4: Testing & Validation

Objective: To verify that the installed network performs as designed and
meets all acceptance criteria.

 5.1 Wired Network Testing: Test every data port for connectivity, and
negotiated speed (e.g., 1Gbps/10Gbps).
 5.2 Wireless Network Testing: Perform a post-installation validation
survey.
o Coverage: Verify strong signal strength (RSSI > -67dBm) across all intended
areas.
o Performance: Conduct throughput and speed tests from various locations.
o Roaming: Test seamless handoff of devices between APs.
o Security: Verify that each SSID provides the correct level of network access
and isolation.
 5.3 User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Work with client representatives to
validate key use cases (e.g., connecting to printer, accessing shared drives,
video calls).

6.0 Phase 5: Documentation & Handover

Objective: To provide the client with all necessary documentation for
ongoing management and support.

 6.2 Credential Handover: Securely transfer all administrative usernames

and passwords for network devices.
 6.3 User Guide: Provide a simple guide for end-users on how to connect to
the new Wi-Fi networks.
 6.4 Training: Conduct a handover session with the client's IT team or point
of contact to explain the network design and basic troubleshooting steps.

7.0 Phase 6: Support Transition (Optional)

Objective: To ensure ongoing stability and provide a path for support.

 7.2 Monitoring: Discuss options for network monitoring and alerting to

proactively identify issues.

Common questions

The site survey is crucial as it involves a physical walk-through to identify structural obstacles, existing infrastructure, and to determine optimal equipment placement. It includes a predictive and/or active Wi-Fi survey to model coverage areas. This process helps in accurately defining the quantity and placement of Access Points (APs) by considering factors like structural barriers and potential interference sources, ensuring comprehensive and reliable network coverage .

Conducting a training session with the client's IT team is crucial as it ensures continuity in network management and support. This session provides an overview of the network design, explains basic troubleshooting steps, and familiarizes the team with operational details. Such training empowers the client's IT personnel to manage the network efficiently, quickly resolve issues, and maintain network stability, thus ensuring seamless operation post-installation .

User acceptance testing (UAT) allows clients to validate the network’s functionality by testing key use cases. It involves client representatives connecting to printers, accessing shared drives, and conducting video calls to ensure these operations are seamless and meet user needs. UAT helps confirm that the network satisfies user requirements and organizational workflows, ensuring practical usability and effectiveness before the final handover .

The credential handover process is critical for maintaining security and proper management of the newly installed network. By securely transferring all administrative usernames and passwords, this step ensures that only authorized personnel have access to the network devices. It prevents unauthorized access and potential security breaches, allowing the client's IT staff to manage and support the network effectively while also ensuring accountability and control over network administration .

During the logical configuration of network equipment, considerations include ensuring accurate setup and connectivity alignment with network architecture. This involves bringing pre-configured equipment online, performing final on-site configuration checks, and adjustments to match system requirements. Key tasks include establishing internet connectivity, core routing, ensuring security protocols are properly implemented, and verifying all devices can communicate effectively within the network. Attention to these factors ensures optimal performance and minimizes issues in the operational phase .

Performing both wired and wireless network testing is vital to verify the system's operational effectiveness and compliance with the design specifications. Wired network testing includes checking each data port for connectivity and speed, ensuring reliable performance. Wireless network testing involves post-installation validation surveys to confirm signal strength, throughput, seamless device handoff between APs, and security compliance. These tests collectively ensure the network performs optimally and meets all acceptance criteria, providing a seamless and secure user experience .

The purpose of providing a user guide is to facilitate end-users in connecting to the new Wi-Fi networks confidently and efficiently. This guide serves as a reference that simplifies network usage, explaining steps to access network resources, troubleshooting common issues, and utilizing available services. It enhances user autonomy and helps prevent unnecessary support calls, contributing to a better overall experience by empowering users with the knowledge to access and utilize network functionalities effectively .

In the pre-staging and preparation phase, hardware configuration is conducted off-site to minimize on-site disruption. This involves unboxing, racking, and pre-configuring the core network equipment such as routers, switches, and Access Points according to the approved design. Steps include setting up SSIDs, security policies, applying firmware updates, and labeling all equipment and ports. By performing these tasks in a controlled environment, it reduces time and errors during on-site installation .

Structured UTP cabling is vital during the physical installation phase as it ensures reliable, organized connectivity. It involves running and terminating Cat6 cables from the main communication room to designated wall ports and Access Point locations. Proper cabling is essential for maintaining optimal data transmission speeds and network stability. It also allows for efficient troubleshooting and expansion, as neatly managed cables make it easier to identify and correct faults or incorporate additional connections as needed .

The phased approach benefits the LAN setup and Wi-Fi installation by ensuring thorough, organized execution and minimizing disruption. Each phase (Discovery and Planning, Pre-Staging & Preparation, Implementation & Installation, Testing & Validation, Documentation & Handover, and Support Transition) is designed to build on the previous stage’s outcomes, ensuring meticulous planning, precise execution, and thorough validation. This structured method ensures a clear progression from designing to testing, resulting in a robust, secure network that meets functional requirements while also being flexible for future growth .
