WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING A TEENAGER IN BRITAIN?
School
British teenagers spend most of their time at school. Students in Britain can leave
school at sixteen (grade 11). This is also the age when most students take their first
important exams, the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education). Most
teens take between 5-10 subjects, which means a lot of studying. They are
spending more time on homework than teenagers ever before. Forget watching TV,

a. Simple Sentences
Definition:
A simple sentence is a sentence that has only one independent clause (a
complete thought) with a subject and a verb. Depending on the verb, the sentence
may also include an object or a complement.
Structure:
Subject + Verb (+ Object / Complement)
Examples:
● You look great.
● I agree.
They are celebrating Christmas.
Notes:
● The subject in a simple sentence can be a compound subject.
Example: An and Nam are my friends.
● A simple sentence can have more than one verb.
Example: He wears a white shirt and drives a black motorbike.
● A simple sentence can have both a compound subject and more than one
verb.
Example: Nga and Thanh get on the taxi and sit on the rear seats.
b. Compound Sentences
Definition:
A compound sentence is a sentence that has two or more independent clauses
of equal importance. Each clause can stand alone and express a complete idea.
There are three main ways to join these independent clauses into a compound
sentence:
1. Using Coordinating Conjunctions
Structure:
Independent Clause + , + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause
Common coordinating conjunctions:
and (và), but (nhưng), for (vì), nor (cũng không), or (hoặc), so (vì vậy), yet (tuy
thế)
Examples:
● Tommy found the folk game interesting, so he decided to join it.
● Tet is the longest holiday in the year, so we need to prepare for it.
2. Using Conjunctive Adverbs
Structure:
Independent Clause + ; + Conjunctive Adverb + , + Independent Clause
Common conjunctive adverbs:
consequently, furthermore, however, otherwise, nevertheless, therefore
Examples:
● Mid-Autumn Festival is considered a kid’s event; however, it is mostly
celebrated by people of all ages.
● He has studied hard the whole year; therefore, he looks forward to a long
holiday.
3. Using a Semicolon (;)
Structure:
Independent Clause + ; + Independent Clause
Note:
This form is often used when the two independent clauses are closely related in
meaning.
Examples:
● I travelled to Sa Pa; I took some photographs of terraced fields.
● The teacher is handling the test results; the students are thinking about their
marks.
