CASE BASED QUESTIONS
Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
Q.29: Just as Gauss’s law is an alternative form of Coulomb’s law in electrostatics, similarly we have
Ampere’s circuital law as an alternative form of Biot – Savart law in magnetostatics. Ampere found
that the magnetic lines of force of a straight current carrying conductor are concentric circles in a
plane perpendicular to the conductor. Ampere’s law is stated with reference to the loop of magnetic
lines of force. We consider a loop to be made up of a number of small line elements. Consider one
such element of length dℓ . Let be the tangential component of field ⃗
B at this element. We
multiply it by element length dℓ . We add all such products. When the lengths of these elements
become small and their number gets larger, this summation tends to an integral. Ampere’s law states
⃗ around any closed loop is equal to μ0 times the net
that the line integral of the magnetic field B
current I passing through the closed loop.
∫ ⃗B . d {⃗ℓ ¿ = μ0 I
The closed loop is called Amperean loop. Ampere’s law is valid for any arbitrary closed loop and
holds only for steady currents. Hoewver, Ampere’s law is useful only for calculating the magnetic
⃗ is tangential to loop and has a non – zero

−3 −3 −7 −7
(a) 2 × 10 T (b) 2 × 10 T (c) 2 × 10 T (d) 2 × 10 T
