SETS WORKSHEET (2025-26)
GRADE-XI SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS
1. Describe each of the following set-in roster form:
(i) {x: x is a two-digit number such that the sum of its digits is 9}
(ii) {x: x is a positive integer less than 10 and 2x -1 is an odd integer}
(iii) {x: x is a solution of the equation x2 - x- 6}
(iv) The fractions whose numerator is 1, and whose denominator is a counting number less than 10
(v) {x: x ∈ N and 4x – 3 ≤ 15}
[Link] the cardinal number of the set A, where A = {x : x is a two-digit number, sum of whose digits is 8}
3. If the set A has five elements, how many subsets will A have? If A has six elements, how many proper
subsets will A have?
4. Two finite sets have m and k elements. If the number of subsets of the first set is 112 more than the
number of subsets of the second set, then find the values of m and k.
5. Let A, B be sets. If x ∈ A and A ∈ B , is it true that x ∈ B? If not, give an example.
6. If U = { x : x ∈ N, x ≤ 8 }, A = {x : 8 < x2 < 40} and B = {x: x is an odd integer}, then draw a venn
diagram to show the relationship between the given sets.
7. If A and B are subsets of the universal set U then prove that (i) A ⸦ A ∪ B and (ii) ( A ∩ B) ⸦ A
8. Let A, B and C be three sets and A ∪ B= A ∪ C and A ∩ B = A ∩ C, show that B = C
9. By using properties of sets , prove that A ⸦ B if and only if B’ ⸦ A’.
10. For sets A, B and C , using properties of sets, prove that
(i) (A ∪ B) ∩ (A ∪ B’) = A (ii) (A ∪ B) - B = A – B
11. Write the complements of the following sets:
(i) A = {x: x is an odd natural number} (ii) B = {x: x is an even natural number}
(iii) C = { x: x+5=8} (iv) D = {x: 3x -1 < 14}
12. For any sets A, B and C, using properties of sets , prove that
(i) A – (A – B) = A ∩ B (ii) (A-B) ∪ (A -C) = ( B ∩ C)
13. If A ∩ B’ = ∅ , then show that A ⸦ B.
14. Let U= the set of letters in the word ‘TAMILNADU’ and X = { x: x is a vowel and x ∈ U}
(i) Write U and X in the roster form.
(ii) Write n(U) and n(X)
(iii) List all the proper subsets of X
(iv) What is the cardinal number of the X?
15. If U = {x: x ∈ N, x ≤ 30}, A = { x: x is prime < 5} , B= { x: x is a perfect square ≤ 10} and C = {x: x is a
perfect cube ≤ 30}, then verify the following results :
(i) (A ∪ B)’ = A’ ∩ B’ (ii) (A ∩ B)’ = A’ ∪ B’
(iii) ( A ∩ B) ∩ C = A ∩ ( B ∩ C) (iv) A’ – B’ = B - A
16. Write the following sets in set-builder form:
1 2 3 4
a. {1,3,5,7,9,11,13} b. { , , , ……}
2 3 4 5
c. { 2,4,8,16,32,64} d. {1,4,9,16,……100}
