Potential Grants

Three research grants were identified that could provide funding for this research project.

These included Sigma Theta Tau International and the Association of Nurses’ Sigma Global

Nursing Research Grant; the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes
of

Health’s grant: Advancing Research on Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Alzheimer's-Disease

Related Dementias (ADRD); and the Alzheimer’s Association’s New to the Field Grant.

The purpose of the Sigma Theta Tau International/Association of Nurses Grant

research grant is to encourage research development by nurses through support of clinically

oriented dementia research to increase the number of dementia studies conducted by nurses.

The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing is a nonprofit organization

whose mission is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship,

leadership, and service. This includes studies focused on dementia care, symptom

management, promotion of self-care, and adherence. Proposals for pilot and/or

developmental research are considered for the grant. This grant would be successful for

funding because the proposed dementia care program focuses on the symptom management

and eligibility criteria and is open to registered nurses with a masters’ degree. Funding is up

The Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health's award

welcomes applications to NIA's Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR)

program. The purpose is to direct research prompting the improvement of inventive items. It

additionally benefits that propel progress in forestalling and treating Alzheimer's sickness

(AD) and Alzheimer's-ailment related dementias (ADRD) or potentially treating AD/ADRD

patients.
Funding is up to $250,000 (National Institutes of Health, n.d.).

The Alzheimer’s Association’s research grant, New to the Field project, aims to fund

investigators who are new to Alzheimer’s and all dementia fields of research. The purpose of

this program is to provide independent investigators with unique expertise and apply their

knowledge to Alzheimer’s and all dementias to develop preliminary or pilot data, to test

procedures, and to develop hypotheses. Total funding is $150,000 for a maximum of 3 years

and a minimum of 2 years. The goal of the New to the Field program is to provide an

opportunity for investigators with expertise outside neurodegenerative research to apply their

expertise to advance and accelerate Alzheimer’s disease and all dementia research

(Alzheimer’s Association, 2020).

Selected Grant

The Sigma Theta Tau International/Association of Nurses’ Sigma Global Nursing

Research Grant will be prioritized for this project. The Sigma Foundation for

Nursing/American Nurses Foundation grant encourages research career development of

nurses through support of research conducted by beginning nurse researchers or experienced

nurse researchers who are entering a new field of study. This research grant supports clinical

nursing research topics related to gerontology, health of nurses, innovation, leadership,

psych/mental health, and women's health. The goal of this project is to assess the nurses’

knowledge and attitude about dementia and dementia care in the acute care hospitals so that

appropriate education can be provided to nurses for person-centered care. This selected grant

is the most logical choice to apply for funding up to $35,000, which would also cover the

entire budget.

Personnal

Balwinder Shukla, RN, MSN, will serve as a primary investigator (PI) on this novice

study on assessing nurses’ knowledge on caring for dementia patient in acute care hospitals.

Balwinder has 20 years of nursing experience in the hospital setting. She will conduct and
supervise the study collecting and analyzing the data, training a research assistant, reviewing

the budget, and coordinating meetings with personnel related to the of the study. She will

devote

25% of her time to the grant. Balwinder will be provided $12,000 for the entire grant
proposal.

Dr. Bulaporn Natipagon-Shah, PhD, RN, will serve as the consultant for this
research.

Dr. Natipagon-Shah is a doctorally-prepared nurse with over 20 years of experience in

nursing.

Currently she is an Assistant Professor at California State University San Marcos, School of

Nursing, and a nurse researcher. Her research focus is on health promotion and cancer

prevention in immigrant populations. For this grant Dr. Natipagon-Shah will devote 10% of

her time. She will serve as the mentor for the overall progress of this grant. She will provide

80 hours of assistance at $125.00/hr. for a total of $10,000 for the entire grant proposal.

Statistician (to be determined). The ideal candidate will be a master’s-prepared

statistician with experience in statistical analysis of data to help evaluate program outcomes

and efficiency. This individual will devote 10% of their time to this grant proposal. Primarily

assigned to lead the initial coding of the surveys, they will input the data into the SPSS

(Version 26) and will assist with transcription and analysis of quantitative data. The

statistician will provide 20 hours of service at $150.00 per hour ($3000).

Personnel Cost:

Research Assistant (to be determined). The ideal candidate for this grant will be a

bachelor’s-prepared person between the ages of 24 and 44 years of age with at least 2 years’

experience as a research assistant in geriatric health care. They will be primarily in charge of

recruitment of participants for this project and responsible for collecting consent/assent

forms, questionnaires, data collection from participants, checking of returned forms and

questionnaires for completeness, and will assist with the initial coding of the questionnaires.

They will devote

25% of their time to this project. This research assistant will provide 50 hours of service at
$40.00 per hour ($2000.00).

Materials Supplies Consumables

• Desktop computer and printer. A desktop computer and printer are needed to generate

flyers, consent/assent forms, and questionnaires, as well as to input, store, and

analyze data. The total cost is estimated at $1,400, including a $1,200 computer and a

$200 printer.

• A back up external hard drive is needed to back up all data at an estimated cost of

$200. • Software: SPSS (Version 26) software product for data management and

analysis for

Windows. Estimated cost is $1,500 for this expense.

• General Office Supplies and Copy paper. General office supplies and copy paper will

be needed during this intervention. General office supplies are estimated at $300.

Copy paper will be needed for flyers, consent/assent forms, questionnaire, and

interim/final reports. Estimated expense for copy paper is $300 ($30/case x 10 cases).

Total cost is estimated at $600 for this expense.

Conference Costs

The research findings will be presented at three national conferences. The first

identified meeting is the Third Annual Evidence Based Practice and Nursing Research

Conference at Ohio University School of Nursing on May 5-6, 2021. The second conference

is the Challenging Geriatric Behavior 1-day conference in Arlington, IL on May 20, 2021.

The third conference is the 32nd SoCal Alzheimer’s Research Conference at the Marriot

Irvine on September 10, 2021 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. See Table 1 for a detailed

explanation of estimated expenses.

Timeline

The predicted amount of time to complete the proposed study is 9 months. After

obtaining IRB approval from CSUSM and the acute care agency, recruitment for participants

for study will begin. Twelve-weeks will be spent recruiting 56 registered nurses from the

hospital site. After consent has been obtained, the study questionnaire will be placed in the

breakroom and the study will begin. The survey completion will take 2 months from start to

finish. Once the questionnaires are completed, it is estimated to take 4 months to input and

analyze the data from the questionnaires in the study and write the research report.

Dissemination Plan

The findings obtained through this grant proposal would be presented at a local,

national, and international conference as outlined above. The 3rd Annual Evidence Based

Practice and Nursing Research Conference Ohio University School of Nursing is

encouraging nurse researchers to present their findings to the other nurse fellows. It will be

beneficial for the other nurses to conduct the same study in their hospitals to improve

dementia care.

The Challenging Geriatric Behavior 1-day conference will be appropriate to present

this study as this conference is for all health care professionals, including experienced staff.

The objectives of this conference are to develop strategies to manage difficult behaviors in
seniors who have an altered perception of reality, identify the signs and symptoms of

Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias, discuss current research on the prevention of

Alzheimer’s disease, as well as lifestyle factors to slow the disease progression. It will also

focus on recognizing the factors for aggravating behavior in dementia patients. The proposed

study is about assessing the knowledge and attitude of nurses about dementia care and it will

be helpful for the persons attending conference.

The 31st SoCal Alzheimer’s Research Conference delivers the latest knowledge in

dementia research and care to the Orange County community. The sponsors for this

conference are The Belmont Senior Living in Orange County, Alzheimer’s Association,

Irvine Clinical Research, and Syrentis Clinical Research. This proposed project will be

beneficial for the nurses, patients, and caregivers to understand the disease.

Journals
Findings from the study would be submitted to three chosen journals, The Journal of

Gerontological Nursing, American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias, and

Research in Gerontological Nursing. For more than 40 years, The Journal of Gerontological

Nursing is a monthly, peer-reviewed nursing journal covering gerontological nursing and

publishing clinically relevant original articles on the practice of gerontological nursing

across the continuum of care in a variety of health care settings. This journal would be

appropriate for submission because it already includes descriptions of leading-edge

education to the nurses about various elderly problems. The findings from this study would

add information to reduce the gap of knowledge in nurses’ knowledge about dementia care.

The American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias is a peer-reviewed,

academic journal that publishes papers in the field of Neurology. The articles published in

this journal are on new research in dementia, practical medical, psychiatric, and nursing

issues such as the assessment and management of problem behaviors, communication

difficulties, dealing with delusions and other psychotic features, apathy, effects of physical

activity, integrated treatment approaches, new and changing pharmacotherapies, orientation

behaviors, and hospice use. It will be appropriate to publish this proposed study in American

Journal of Alzheimer's

Disease and Other Dementias as it has become fully open access journal from January 1,

2020, and its readership is not limited to nurses but available to all including MDs, NPs,

researchers, students, and the public.

Research in Gerontological Nursing is a bi-monthly peer-reviewed nursing journal

covering gerontological nursing offering innovative, interdisciplinary gerontological nursing

research to educators, academicians, clinicians, and policymakers involved with older adults

in all health care settings. It will be appropriate to publish this proposed study findings in this

journal because it encourages nursing research and is accessible to clinicians, educators and

everybody involved with the elderly care.
