were designed to convey that I genuinely cared about her well-being and understood the

difficulty of her situation.

Questioning

Effective questioning is essential for uncovering underlying issues and guiding the client towards
solutions. During the session, I used open-ended questions to encourage Sarah to explore her
feelings and identify specific challenges. For example, I asked her to elaborate on what aspects
of her workload were most overwhelming and whether she had considered discussing her
concerns with her manager. These questions helped Sarah articulate her issues more clearly and
think about possible steps to address them.

Goal Setting

Goal setting is a critical component of counseling, helping clients develop actionable plans to
address their concerns. In this session, I supported Sarah in setting a goal to prepare for a
conversation with her manager about her workload. I also suggested practical strategies for
improving her time management, such as using to-do lists and breaking tasks into smaller steps.
Setting these goals aimed to empower Sarah to take control of her situation and enhance her
ability to manage her workload effectively.

Reflections on Skill Application

Throughout the session, my use of active listening, empathy, questioning, and goal setting was
intended to support Sarah in navigating her current challenges. Active listening and empathy
helped establish a supportive environment where Sarah felt comfortable discussing her
difficulties. Effective questioning allowed her to explore and articulate her concerns, while goal
setting provided her with concrete steps to address her issues.

However, there are areas for further improvement. For example, while I suggested time
management techniques, I could have explored additional resources or tools that might be helpful
for Sarah. Additionally, incorporating more techniques for stress management and discussing her
overall well-being in greater depth might have provided a more comprehensive approach to her
situation.

In future sessions, I aim to enhance my practice by incorporating feedback from clients and
remaining open to adapting strategies based on their evolving needs. By continually refining my
skills and staying attuned to the client’s experiences, I hope to provide even more effective
support and facilitate positive outcomes in their counseling journey.

Overall, the session with Sarah demonstrated the importance of employing counseling skills
effectively to support clients through their challenges. By continuing to develop these skills and
reflecting on their application, I can improve my practice and better support clients in achieving
their goals and improving their well-being.
