subject of the modifier is missing from the sentence, and instead
another subject appears in its .

that does not logically connect to the subject in the sentence.

It usually occurs when the word being modified is
either missing or placed incorrectly.

In simple terms, the description is present, but the
doer of the action is absent or unclear.
• When a modifier is not clearly attached to the word
it is supposed to describe, it is called a dangling modifier
because it is “left hanging” without a logical subject.
• Dangling modifiers often take the form of an
introductory phrase that is connected to the wrong thing.

• A dangling modifier just dangles or hangs in a

hanging modifier.
• Unlike misplaced modifiers, dangling modifiers
can’t be fixed by simply placing them next to the
word/words they modify. Why not? Because the sentences
they are in don’t have the subject they intend to modify..

Unclear reference – the modifier does not clearly indicate
which word it describes.

Illogical meaning – the sentence may suggest something
unintended.

Often caused by omission – usually the subject of the
action is missing or misplaced.

Common with participial phrases – such as Running down
the street… or While reading the book…
• Imagine an interesting scene to understand dangling

• Steps to Identify Dangling Modifiers

1. Locate the Modifier Phrase…

Most dangling modifiers are introductory
phrases (often starting with verbs ending in –ing or –ed,
or words like after, before, when, while, having, although).

Ask yourself: What action is being described here?.
• 2. Find the Subject of the Main Clause….

. Look right after the comma or at the start of the
main clause.

Ask: Who or what is performing the action of the modifier?
• 3. Check if the Modifier Logically Matches the Subject…

The subject of the main clause must be the doer
of the modifier’s action.

If it doesn’t make sense, you’ve got a dangling modifier.
• 4. Watch for “Missing Subjects”…..

. Sometimes, the subject is completely missing.
That’s another clue.

Example:

Driving through the forest, the birds chirped loudly.

Who is driving? It’s not stated. The subject (I, we, she, etc.)
is missing.
• 5…..Look Out for Common Signals…..

Dangling modifiers often appear in sentences that:

Begin with participles (Walking, Running, Having finished…)

Begin with infinitives (To succeed, To make the best
impression…)

Begin with prepositional phrases (After, Before, While,
When…)
• 6. Test the Sentence by Asking “Who or What?”….

. Whenever you see a modifying phrase, ask:

Who is doing this action?

Does the subject that follows match logically?

If the answer doesn’t fit, you’ve found a dangling modifier.

• Leave the rest of the sentence as it is.
