Tutorial-4

Q1. What is the required basic dynamic load rating C for a ball bearing to carry a radial load of 550 kg
from a shaft rotating at 500 rpm that is part of an assembly conveyor in manufacturing plant? (Take the
design life of bearing as 1000 million revolutions).

Q2. A full journal bearing having clearance to radius ratio of 1/100, using a lubricant with absolute
viscosity 28 cP, supports the journal running at 2400 rpm. If the bearing pressure is 1.4 MPa, then find the
Sommerfeld number.

Q3. A lightly loaded full journal bearing has a journal of 50 mm diameter, bush bore of 50.50 mm
diameter and bush length of 20 mm. If rotational speed of journal is 1200 rpm and average viscosity of
liquid lubricant is 0.03 Pa-s, then what will be the power loss.

Q4(a): The dimensions and rating of a single row 02-series deep groove ball bearing are given below:
Bore: 10 mm, OD: 30 mm, Width: 9 mm; C : 2.24 kN (static), C : 5.07 kN (dynamic)

What is the life-expectancy (in hours) of the bearing if the bearing is radially loaded by 1.5 kN and the shaft
rotates with angular speed of 1200 rpm? What is the reliability of this estimation?

Q4(b): One end of a rotor shaft is supported by an angular contact ball bearing (02 series) with the following
specification:
Bore: 65 mm, OD: 120 mm, Width: 23 mm; C : 41.5 kN (static), C : 63.7 kN (dynamic)

The rotor transmits a torque of 200 Nm at 15 kW. The bearing reaction consists of a radial load of magnitude
2.07 kN and an axial load of 1.5 kN. The life goal of the bearing is 10 kh with 99% reliability and the
application (service) factor is 1.2. Find out whether the selected bearing is adequate for the application.
Justify your answer.

Use the following data.

𝐹 /𝐶 𝑒 𝐹 /𝐹 ≤ 𝑒 𝐹 /𝐹 > 𝑒
𝑋 𝑌 𝑋 𝑌
0.028 0.22 1.0 0 0.56 1.99
0.042 0.24 1.0 0 0.56 1.85

Q5: (a) Explain Lewis form factor. What is its significance in gear tooth design?
(b) What do you understand by velocity (or dynamic) factor in a gear design? How is it applied in
gear design?
(c) State the Law of Gearing. Further, name at least 5 different gear types under the classification
of gears.
(d) Draw sketch of a spur gear tooth and specify the terminology associated with it.
Q6(a): The following data for a 360o hydrodynamic bearing are available:

The ratio 𝑙: 𝐷 = 1; Journal speed = 1350 rpm; Journal diameter = 100 mm;
diametrical clearance = 100 𝜇𝑚, Load = 9 kN.

It is required to design the bearing so that the minimum film thickness is 15 𝜇𝑚. Find the viscosity of the
oil needed for the bearing.

The following data may be used.

𝑙/𝐷 ℎ /𝑐 (or ℎ ) 𝑆 (or 𝑆 )

1 0.4 0.121
1 0.2 0.0446

Q6(b): A full hydrodynamic journal bearing has a journal diameter 𝐷 = 25.0000 mm with a unilateral
tolerance of –0.0038 mm. The bushing bore has a diameter of 25.0037 mm and a unilateral tolerance of
+0.0075 mm. The 𝑙/𝐷 ratio of the bearing is unity. The load is 1.1 kN and the journal runs at 18.85 rad/s.
If the average/equivalent viscosity of the oil is 0.0552 Pa.s, find (i) the minimum film thickness, (ii) the
power loss and (iii) the side flow for the minimum clearance assembly.

Also calculate the maximum temperature difference within the fluid film if 𝜌 = 860 kg/m3 and
𝐶 = 1760 J/kg oC

The following data may be used:

1 0.4 0.121 3.22 4.33 0.680 2.944

Q7: A pinion having 20 teeth runs at 30 rev/s and transmits 2.5 kW to the gear with a speed reduction of
1:2. The teeth are cut on the 20o full depth system and have a module of 𝑚 = 2.5 mm. The gear is mounted
at mid-span of a shaft of length 250 mm. The ends of the shaft are supported by two short bearings (may
be treated as simple supports). Further a resistance torque acts on the shaft at 62.5 mm from one of the
bearings. The shaft is designed to have a life of 105 cycles. Determine the shaft diameter with a factor of
safely 2.0.

The following material data may be used:

𝑆 = 690 MPa, 𝑆 = 580 MPa, 𝜀 (fracture strain)=1.01, 𝑆 (fully corrected) = 240 MPa

Q8: A wire of diameter 𝑑 is wound to make a helical spring of helix (coil) diameter 𝐷. The length of the
wire is long enough to make 𝑁 complete turns. The spring is stretched by an axial force 𝐹. The shear
modulus of the spring material is G. Derive expressions for the (i) maximum shear stress within the spring
(ii) elongation/deflection of the spring and (iii) critical frequency of the spring.
