ARJUNA
JEE 2025
Complex Numbers-1
Mathematics
Lecture - 03
By -Tarun Khandelwal (TK Sir)
B-Tech, IIT Delhi (A.I.R. 289)
Physics Wallah

Topics to be covered

1. Problems on Conjugate

2. Modulus of a Complex Numbers

3. Properties of Modulus

Important Note:
Three important terms for a complex number:
(i) Conjugate of a complex number (Z)
(ii) Modulus of a complex number (|z|)
(iii) Argument of a complex number (arg (z))

RECAP: Conjugate of a Complex Number

If $ z = x + iy $, then conjugate $ \bar{z} = x - iy $

 $ z + \bar{z} = 2,\mathrm{Re}(z) $

 $ z - \bar{z} = 2i,\mathrm{Im}(z) $
 $ |z|^2 = z \bar{z} $

 Purely Real ⇒ $ \mathrm{Im}(z) = 0 $

 Purely Imaginary ⇒ $ \mathrm{Re}(z) = 0 $

QUESTION:
If $ a + ib $ and $ a - ib $ are conjugates and $ x + iy = ? $, then show that $ x^2 + y^2
= 1 $.

QUESTION:
If the conjugate of $ (x + iy)(1 - 2i) $ is $ 1 + i $, then

A) $ y = \frac{1}{5} $
B) $ x = -\frac{5}{3} $
C) $ x + iy = 1 - 2i $
D) $ x - iy = 1 + i $

QUESTION:
Q. Solve for $ z $:
(i) $ z^2 + z = 0 $. If $ y = 0 $, then $ x = 0 $ or −1 .

QUESTION (JEE ADV 2022):

Let $ \bar{z} $ denote conjugate of $ z $ and $ i = \sqrt{-1} $.
Number of distinct roots of the equation
$ z - z^2 = i(z + z^2) $ is ...

Topic: Modulus of a Complex Number $ |z| $

Example: $ z = 3 + 4i $, then $ |z| = \sqrt{3^2 + 4^2} = 5 $.

QUESTION:
Solve for $ z $: $ z^2 + |z| = 0 $.
QUESTION:
Find the value of: $ (3-4i)(7+24i) $

Options:
A) $ 13 - 4i $
B) 25
C) 625
D) $ 19 + 31i $

QUESTION [JEE Main Jan 11, 2019 II]:

If $ z $ satisfies $ |z| + z = 3 + i $, then $ |z| = ? $

Options:
A) $ \sqrt{34} $
B) 3
C) $ \sqrt{41} $
D) 4

QUESTION:
If $ |z_1| = |z_2| = 1 $ (unimodular), find $ |3z_1 - 4z_2|^2 + |4z_1 + 3z_2|^2 $.

QUESTION:
Prove:

2 2 2 2
¿ 1 − z 1 z 2 ¿ −∨z 1 − z 2 ¿ =(1 −∨z 1 ¿ )(1 −∨z 2 ¿ )

QUESTION [JEE Main 2021 March]:

For complex $ z $, $ |z| \neq 1 $, satisfying $ \log(1 + |z|) \leq 2 $, largest value of $ |z| $
is:

A) 5
B) 8
C) 6
D) 7
