PRACTICE EXERCISES

1. A rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 500 mm deep, is reinforced with 4 -#25 bars. Using
a #10-stirrup, a cover of 40 mm, f’c = 21 MPa, fy = 420 MPa and n=8. Assuming a normal
weight concrete and a M = 120 kN.m, determine the concrete and steel stresses.

2. A rectangular beam 350 mm wide and 550 mm deep, is reinforced with 5 -#22 bars placed
at the tension face and 2 - #16 bars at the compression face. Using a #10-stirrup, a cover of 40
mm, f’c = 24 MPa, fy = 300 MPa and n=8. Assuming a normal weight concrete and a M = 150
kN.m, determine the concrete and steel stresses.

3. A rectangular beam 400 mm wide and 650 mm deep, is reinforced with 6 -#25 bars. Using
a #10-stirrup, a cover of 40 mm, f’c = 21 MPa and , fy = 420 MPa. Assuming a normal weight
concrete and a factored moment, Mu = 120 kN.m, determine if the beam section is
adequate to resist the given factored moment.

4. A t-beam section has a web width bw = 300 mm and a total height h = 600 mm. The flange
width is 800 mm and the flange thickness is 100 mm. If fc’ = 28 MPa , fy = 350 MPa, M = 180
kN.m, n = 9, tensile reinforcement consists of 6-#25 bars. DEtermine the concrete and steel
stresses.

5. For the following beams, classify the beam as compression-controlled, transition- region,
or ternsion-controlled and determine the φ factor.

Problem 4.1

 Rectangular beam: b = 300 mm, h = 500 mm, d = 450 mm

 Reinforcement: 4-25mm bars
 Material: f'c = 28 MPa, fy = 420 MPa

Problem 4.2

 Rectangular beam: b = 400 mm, h = 700 mm, d = 650 mm

 Reinforcement: 8-32mm bars
 Material: f'c = 28 MPa, fy = 300 MPa
