CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Overview of the business

This feasibility report proposes the establishment of a hybrid (physical and

optionally online) cybercafé with the School of Basic Medical Sciences at the

University of Benin. The business is designed to provide essential digital

services to meet the needs of students, researchers, and academic needs of

students, researchers, and university staff. By offering convenient, reliable, and

affordable services such as printing, school fee payment, and online

registrations, the cyber café aims to close the wide service gap currently

plaguing the student environment.

1.2 Name of the Business

1.3 Business Location

Proposed Location: In front of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, next to

the security building, University of Benin.

This prime location is in the main hub of student movement in and out of the

school compound. It is situated at the front of the complex, directly beside the

security post — a spot that experiences constant student traffic throughout the

day. Students regularly pass through entering or exiting the school, making it
highly accessible and visible. Additionally, the location is within close

proximity to the two major lecture theatres in the school environment, allowing

for easy access between classes and digital service needs. Its strategic

placement ensures convenience, visibility, and relevance to the academic flow

of daily student life.

2.3 Business Idea and Opportunity

Despite a student population in the thousands, there are only two to three

cybercafés around the department, which are frequently overwhelmed. Long

queues, limited equipment, unstable power supply, and understaffing prevent

students from efficiently accessing basic services such as printing, Remita

payment, or online registration. This cybercafé addresses those challenges by

offering fast, well-staffed, tech-enabled services that reduce waiting time and

improve academic efficiency. It is also a lifeline for students without personal

laptops or printers.

2.4 Vision and Mission Statement

Vision: To become the most accessible and dependable cybercafé for academic

and digital services in the School of Basic Medical Sciences.

Mission: To provide reliable, student-focused cybercafé services that are

always available, affordable, and efficient — empowering academic progress

through technology.

2.5 Motivation and Backstory

This business was born out of a real need and a frustrating experience. During

an urgent attempt to print a document, the only nearby option — Starbucks

Cafe — was overcrowded and without power due to a lack of generator fuel.

The staff were overwhelmed with students handling large editing and project

work, and a simple print job could not be completed. Such experiences are

common. The few cybercafés around the department face severe understaffing,

unstable power supply, and poor equipment maintenance. With a consistent

demand from undergraduate to Ph.D. students, this business was envisioned to

create a smoother, faster, and more reliable alternative.

2.6 Business Objectives

Serve at least 50–100 students daily within the first year of operation. Achieve

full operational efficiency and break even within 6–8 months. Expand service

delivery to include online request handling or a second branch by year two.

Maintain consistent availability through power backup systems and adequate

staffing. Become the top-rated student service provider in the department by

customer satisfaction score.
