Short Vowels(7): It is pronounced in a short form or quick manner.

Diphthongs(8): In diphthong vowels, one vowel sound changes to another vowel sound in
the same syllable. The vowels are adjacent to each other. They are gliding vowels. The word

meaning is: ‘having two sounds together’.

Introduction to Listening

Consonant Sound(24):Consonant Sounds are produced with the stoppage of air. There is an obstruction
while pronouncing the Consonant Sounds.

SILENT LETTERS AND NON-SILENT LETTERS

SILENT LETTERS: We know that a few letters are silent while pronouncing. Such letters are
called Silent Letters. They are not accented.

● We know that ‘the’ is a definite article. It is pronounced in two ways. Before vowel
sound, it is a long ‘thee.’ Before a consonant sound, it is a short ‘The’. While
emphasizing words, it is a long ‘thee’. In the case of uniqueness, it is pronounced as a
long ‘thee’ too.

● Remember! Words may begin either with a vowel or consonant sound.


HOMOPHONES, HOMONYMS

Homophone: It has same pronunciation but different spellings and different


meanings.
Example: Pray-Prey

It is the ability to hear what is said. So, learn to accelerate Listening Comprehension
Skills.

The following tips will help you a lot:

● Be an active listener and so use the latest software tools, apps, podcasts, and other
materials as per your taste and interest.

● Get exposed to various listening activities, mainly on BBC and other English
Channels.

● Select a comprehensible input of your choice that you enjoy.

● Think in a broad way to capture the theme.


● Listen and re-listen any time, convenient to you. Listen to the main points of the
audio/video very carefully. Practice listening at slow, moderate and fast speed.

● Try to take short notes while listening to improve comprehension.

● Vary your listening routine.

● Be cool and meticulous in your approaches.

● Thereafter, attempt the questions patiently.


Prepositions
A Preposition is a word that comes before a Noun or Pronoun and shows its relation with
some other word in the sentence.

Example: My friend is in the playground. Here, ‘ in’ is a preposition.

Kinds of Prepositions: Prepositions are of many kinds. They are as under:

Simple Prepositions such as: on, at, to, in, from, with, by etc.
Example: The book is on the table.
`Go to the market, please.

Compound Prepositions such as: between, among, before, beside etc.


Example: Divide this apple between the two boys.
Distribute these chocolates among the children.
Phrasal Prepositions such as: in order to, in front of, by means of, in addition to etc.
Example: Please come and stand in front of me.
You need my support in order to do this work.

Participial Prepositions such as: concerning, barring, during etc.


Example: Barring a few students, everybody attended the class.

A collocation is made up of two or more words that are commonly used together in
English.
