DESIGN PROBLEMS
1. Figure shows a hydraulic structure built on a fine sand (C = 15) Determine
(a) Whether the percolation gradient is safe.
(b) Uplift pressure at A, B, and C at distances of 15, 25 and 35 m from the upstream end.
(c) Thickness of floor from these points. Use Bligh’s theory Take G=2.24. (Example
18.1)
2. Solve the Q1 using Lane’s weighted creep theory. Assume C1=8.5. (Example 18.2)
3. Determine the uplift pressure at the salient points E, D and C of the intermediate pile
shown in figure 18.13. (Example 18.3)
4. Determine the uplift pressure at the salient points E, D and C of the d/s pile shown in
figure 18.14 (a).Also check the results by using the results of the d/s pile in Question no

(i) Design flood discharge in the river = 9000 m3/s
(ii) Deepest bed level of the river = 200
(iii) High flood level before construction = 206.00
(iv) Full supply level of canal = 203.00
(v) Permissible afflux = 1.0 m
(vi) Bed retrogression = 0.50 m
(vii) Discharge concentration factor = 20%
(viii) Lacey’s silt factor = 1.0
(ix) Safe exit gradient = 1/6
(x) Pier concentration coefficient = 0.10
(xi) Full supply discharge of canal = 200.0m3/s
The stage discharge curve of the river at the site is shown in Fig. 19.2. Assume other
suitable data if required. (Example 19.1)
9. Design the weir bay section for the data given in Example 19.1. (Example 19.2)
10. Design a vertical drop weir using Bligh’s theory and check the exit gradient and the
thickness of floor by Khosla’s theory for the following data: (Example 19.3)

(ii) High flood level before construction = 200.00
(iii) F.S.L. of canal = 199.00
(iv) Average bed level of river = 193.00
(v) retrogression of Bed = 0.50 m
(vi) Lacey’s silt factor = 1.0

(viii) Coefficient of creep = 10
(ix) Minimum Downstream water level= Bed level= 193.00

11. Design a silt Excluder for the diversion head works for the data given in Example 19.1.

(iv) Bay width of undersluices = 16 m.
12. Design a head regulator for the data given in Example 19.1. (Example 19.5)
