Old exam questions for ECE113 Midterm #1

1) Consider an AC circuit consisting of parallel- and series-connected

components, Y1, Y2 , and Z3, as shown in the figure below.

The input voltage is v(t) = 10 cos(ωt), with f = 60 Hz. The components are:
Y1 = 0.2 + j S, Y2 = 0.8 - j S, & Z3 = +j Ω.
a) Find and sketch the voltage phasor V & current phasor I on a single plot.
b) Find an expression for the time-domain current i (t).
c) What is the net, time-average power supplied by the voltage source?
d) Determine the power factor PF.

2) Consider an AC circuit consisting of two series-connected impedances Z1 and

Z2 as shown in the figure below.

Let Is = 0.1 ∠45º Amps-rms,

Z1 = 1 - j2 Ω , & Z2 = +j1 Ω.

a) Assume f = 1 kHz to find an expression for the time-domain current Is(t)

a) Determine the phasor voltage V & the time-domain voltage v(t).
b) Sketch the voltage and current phasors on one plot.
c) Determine the complex power P & the power factor PF.
d) What is the time-average power consumed by Z1and by Z2?

3) A sinusoidal voltage, vtest (t) = Vo cos (ωt), is applied to a network of

resistors and Si diodes, and the current is monitored using a scope.

• For Vo = 0.5 volts, the recorded current is the symmetric, sinusoidal

waveform shown in A below.

-5 mA

• For Vo = 5.0 volts, the current waveform becomes asymmetric as shown in

B below.

a) Propose the simplest possible network consisting of the minimum number of

resistors and diodes that could give these current output waveforms.
HINT: first decide how many diodes are needed, and then figure out the
number and placement of resistors.
b) What are the values of the resistors?

a) Match the circuits (a), (b), and (c) with the i-v curves (1), (2), and (3).

b) Which inequality, R1 > R2 or R1 < R2 , is consistent with all three i-v curves,
(1), (2), and (3)? In a few well-written sentences, explain the reasoning you
used to get your answer
